What a lab looks at in garnet
- Species: refractive index, density and spectrum show whether it is almandine, pyrope, spessartine, grossular (hessonite included) or demantoid.
- Doublets: garnet-topped glass is an old imitation. Placed table-down, it shows a seam and a red ring.
- Look-alikes: ruby, red spinel and glass are ruled out.
- Treatment: garnet is almost never treated, and the report usually confirms this.
Asking for a report
Choose a stone from our garnet collection and message us its link on WhatsApp. We will explain how that particular stone would be tested, and the report reaches you before you pay a rupee. You can do the same with hessonite (gomed), ruby and red agate. There is more on our lab-certified gemstones page.
