Natural Malachite Stone in Pakistan
Nobody mistakes malachite for anything else. It is an opaque green stone swirled with light and dark rings, stripes and "eyes", and every piece carries its own pattern. At Authentic Gems each malachite is one natural piece, photographed as it is and priced on its own, so you choose the exact pattern you like rather than a lucky dip.

Choosing a good piece
With malachite, the pattern is what you are paying for. When comparing pieces, look at:
- Banding - clean concentric rings, eyes or flowing stripes with strong contrast between light and dark green.
- Colour - a deep, vivid green rather than a dull or greyish one.
- Polish - good malachite takes a silky, nearly glassy shine.
- Surface - no pits, cracks or filled holes on the face.
- Size and shape - larger, well-shaped cabochons cost more.
Malachite is priced by the piece, and each listing's per-carat rate is just the price divided by carat weight.
What it is
Malachite is a copper carbonate, which is where that strong green comes from. It grows in layers, and those layers become the bands you see once it is cut and polished. The Democratic Republic of the Congo is the best-known source, with more from elsewhere in Africa. It is soft, only about 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale, so it is usually cut as cabochons, beads and carvings rather than faceted stones.
Reconstituted and plastic copies
You will come across plastic, printed glass and "reconstituted" malachite, which is crushed stone held together with resin. Natural malachite has irregular, flowing bands that never repeat exactly, while imitations often look printed, repeat themselves or seem a little too neat. Real malachite also feels cool and heavier than plastic. Our authenticity page explains how we check every piece.
Belief and tradition
Malachite is traditionally seen as a protective, grounding stone, said to soak up negativity and support confidence during change. Some South Asian astrological traditions connect it with Venus (Shukra) and emotional balance, and it is usually set in silver. These are beliefs, not guaranteed effects.
Looking after a soft stone
Because it is soft and sensitive, malachite needs more care than harder gems:
- Keep it away from acids, household cleaners, perfume and heat.
- Take a malachite ring off for washing, cooking and exercise.
- Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it straight away.
- Store it on its own so harder stones cannot scratch it.
