Natural Bloodstone in Pakistan
Bloodstone is the dark green stone with red flecks that older men in Pakistan often wear as a plain, heavy ring. In Arabic and Urdu it is called Hajr al-Dam, and for centuries it has carried stories of strength and protection. Each bloodstone at Authentic Gems is one natural piece, photographed as it is and priced on its own, so the pattern in the photo is the pattern you receive.

Why people choose it
It has a quiet, solid look that suits men's signet-style rings and cabochon pendants especially well. The deep green body and red speckling are entirely natural, so no two stones match. It is also hard and tough enough for daily wear, at about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.
What it is made of
Bloodstone, also called heliotrope, is an opaque form of chalcedony, the fine-grained quartz family that also gives us Aqeeq and jasper. Mineral inclusions give the green, and the red spots are iron oxide. India is the best-known source of good material.
How we judge a bloodstone
- Base colour - a deep, rich green without grey patches is preferred.
- Red spotting - bright red flecks spread fairly evenly over the face are the most valued; stones with few spots, or brownish ones, are cheaper.
- Finish - a smooth, glassy polish and a well-shaped cabochon or flat top show the stone at its best.
- Size and soundness - bigger stones without cracks cost more.
The price on each listing is for that single stone, and dividing by carat weight gives the per-carat rate.
Natural or imitation?
Copies are usually dyed stone or glass with red marks that look painted on or oddly regular. Natural spots vary in shape and size and sit within the stone, not on its surface. Real bloodstone polishes to a fine shine and feels cool in the hand. Our authenticity page explains how we check each piece.
Bloodstone in tradition
It has long been known as a "warrior's stone". In South Asian astrology it is linked with Mars (Mangal) and traditionally worn, often in silver or copper on the ring finger, for courage, stamina and protection. These beliefs have been passed down for generations but are not guaranteed outcomes; if astrology guides your choice, speak to an astrologer you trust.
Care
Wash with mild soap and warm water, then dry with a soft cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and store it away from harder stones.
