Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
A rashi stone is not the same as a birthstone
Two different traditions often get blended together in Pakistan. Vedic astrology (jyotish) connects every rashi to a ruling planet and every planet to a gem: Neelam for Saturn, Pukhraj for Jupiter, Yaqoot for the Sun and so on. Your rashi is your moon sign, calculated from the date, time and place you were born. Western birthstones simply follow your birth month, so anyone born in July gets ruby whatever their chart shows. The month system is covered on our birthstones pages. This section follows the Vedic system, which is what most families here have in mind when they ask for a stone "for my star".
The twelve signs and their stones
Only seven planets rule the twelve signs, so some signs share a stone. The dates on each sign's page are Western sun-sign dates, given for reference.
| Sign | Rashi | Ruling planet | Traditional stone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mesh | Mars | red coral (Marjan) |
| Taurus | Vrishabh | Venus | diamond; we offer white sapphire or opal |
| Gemini | Mithun | Mercury | emerald (Zamurd) |
| Cancer | Kark | Moon | pearl (Moti) |
| Leo | Simha | Sun | ruby (Yaqoot) |
| Virgo | Kanya | Mercury | emerald (Zamurd) |
| Libra | Tula | Venus | diamond; we offer opal or white sapphire |
| Scorpio | Vrishchik | Mars | red coral (Marjan) |
| Sagittarius | Dhanu | Jupiter | yellow sapphire (Pukhraj) |
| Capricorn | Makar | Saturn | blue sapphire (Neelam) |
| Aquarius | Kumbh | Saturn | blue sapphire (Neelam) |
| Pisces | Meen | Jupiter | yellow sapphire (Pukhraj) |
The pairings are simple to remember. Mars gives red coral to Aries and Scorpio, Venus gives its diamond stones to Taurus and Libra, Mercury gives emerald to Gemini and Virgo, Jupiter gives yellow sapphire to Sagittarius and Pisces, and Saturn gives blue sapphire to Capricorn and Aquarius. Cancer takes pearl for the Moon, and Leo takes ruby for the Sun. Since we do not sell diamonds, for the two Venus signs we recommend opal, white sapphire or white topaz.
Choosing by sign or by planet
Going by your sign
The straightforward rule is to wear the stone of the planet that rules your rashi. Each sign's page gives its main stone, a substitute, how it is traditionally worn and what to check before buying.
Going by the planets in your chart
Experienced astrologers tend to look at the whole birth chart instead: the ascendant (lagna), the current dasha, and which planets are strong or weak. That can lead to a stone for a planet that does not rule your sign at all, Rahu and Ketu included. Our nine planetary stones page gives the gem for each planet, and the background is explained in our article on gemstones by rashi.
Strong stones and gentle ones
By tradition, Neelam, Yaqoot, Pukhraj, Marjan, Gomed and Lehsunia are strong stones, usually worn only after a reading. Pearl, moonstone, amethyst, Aqeeq and citrine are often seen as gentle enough to wear freely. Substitutes cost less and are considered milder, which is why plenty of people begin with one.
What we will and will not do
Authentic Gems does not read charts and makes no astrological promises. We sell natural stones, each photographed and priced individually, with any known treatment stated. Send us your astrologer's recommendation, or your date of birth if you want a suggestion based on your sign, and we will show you stones in the weight you need. You can open the parcel and check the stone before paying the rider, and our 7-day return policy leaves room for the customary trial period. To learn how we inspect stones, read how we check every gemstone.
