Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.

This is the modern list. Jewellers settled on it in 1912 and it has been adjusted a few times since. April is traditionally diamond, but we don't stock diamonds, so for April birthdays we point people to natural white sapphire or white topaz. Both are colourless and hard enough to wear daily. If you want the background to the list, our piece Birthstones explained covers it, and What is my birthstone? is a quick lookup with the Urdu names.
Your birthstone is not the same as your rashi stone
People mix these up all the time at the counter. A birthstone comes from the calendar: the month you were born, nothing more. A rashi stone comes from Vedic astrology, worked out from your zodiac sign and the planet that rules it. So one person can end up with two different answers. A July baby has ruby as a birthstone, while a rashi reading might suggest something else entirely. In a lot of Pakistani homes both are used side by side: the month stone as a gift or a personal piece, and the rashi stone when someone wants to wear a gem for astrological reasons. For that second list, see our zodiac gemstones guide.
When people give birthstones
- Birthdays. A loose stone is personal without being fussy. Later, your family jeweller can set it in gold or silver as a ring, pendant or pair of earrings.
- Eid. Tucked in with Eidi, a small birthstone outlasts the cash by decades. Leave a little time: we dispatch within 1 working day of confirming, Karachi usually gets it in 1–2 working days, and other cities in 2–7 depending on where you are.
- Weddings. Some couples swap birthstones, or pick the stone for the wedding month, as a mooh dikhai gift or a nikah ring.
- New babies. A few families buy a birthstone when a child is born and keep it until the child is old enough to wear it.
