Few stones come in so many patterns. These are the ones customers ask about most:

• Red jasper - the classic: an even brick to blood red, and the favourite for rings.
• Picture and landscape jasper - browns and tans that form natural scenes of hills, dunes or skies.
• Green and multi-coloured jasper - mixed tones and swirls for bolder, statement pieces.

Jasper or Aqeeq?

They are close relatives. Jasper is an opaque form of fine-grained quartz, often grouped with chalcedony, while Aqeeq is the translucent form. The quick test: hold the stone up to a strong light. Aqeeq lets light through; jasper does not. Both sit around 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale and wear well.

What makes one Yashab worth more

In solid red jasper, an even, rich colour without grey patches is what you want. In patterned jasper, the pattern is the whole point: a clear, balanced "picture" fetches more than a muddy or random one. A smooth, glossy polish with no pits or cracks, a well-shaped cabochon and a larger size all add to the price. Each listing is priced on its own, and the per-carat rate is price divided by carat weight.

Imitations

Because jasper is inexpensive, it is copied less than costly gems, but dyed stone, reconstituted chips set in resin, and printed glass or plastic still turn up. Watch for patterns that repeat or look too perfect, colour that seems painted on, and a light, warm feel in the hand. Natural jasper has irregular, flowing patterns and feels cool and solid. Yashab in tradition

Yashab appears in older Islamic and Persian writing on stones, and jasper has long been called a "supreme nurturer", traditionally worn for stability, grounding and protection. In some South Asian astrological traditions red jasper is linked with Mars (Mangal) and worn, often in silver or copper, for endurance. These are beliefs, not guaranteed effects.

Care

Wash it with mild soap and water and dry it well. Harsh chemicals can dull the polish, so keep them away.
