Natural Dur-e-Najaf Stone in Pakistan
For many of the people who ask us about Dur-e-Najaf, the stone is about faith before it is about gemmology. The name means "pearl of Najaf", after the holy city in Iraq, and the stone itself is clear, colourless natural quartz, or rock crystal. Every Dur-e-Najaf at Authentic Gems is a single natural stone, photographed as it is and priced on its own, so you can choose by clarity, shape and size.

Dur-e-Najaf stones
A stone carried home by pilgrims
Zaireen returning from Iraq have brought these clear stones home for generations, and today they are worn in silver rings across Pakistan, sometimes together with Aqeeq and sometimes instead of it. Wearers value it as a stone of blessing, protection and peace of mind. We respect that, and present it as a matter of faith and tradition rather than a promised effect.
Choosing your stone
Clarity first
The finest Dur-e-Najaf is clear like water, with no cloudiness, cracks or visible inclusions. Slightly milky or included stones cost less and are just as meaningful to many buyers.
Cut and polish
Faceted stones throw sparkle; smooth cabochons give a softer, glassy glow. A crisp polish with no scratches or chipped edges adds to the value.
Size
Bigger clean stones are priced higher. Since each listing is one stone, the per-carat rate is simply its price divided by its weight.
The mineral
Rock crystal is pure silicon dioxide with no colouring elements. At 7 on the Mohs scale it shrugs off everyday scratches and suits a ring worn daily.
Telling it apart from glass
Because it has no colour, Dur-e-Najaf is very easy to copy in glass or acrylic. A few simple checks:
- Quartz feels cold and stays cool in the hand, while glass and plastic warm up quickly.
- Under a loupe, natural stones often show tiny wisps, needles or veils; glass may show round bubbles or swirl lines.
- Plastic feels oddly light and picks up scratches easily.
Our authenticity page explains how we check every stone, and you are welcome to have yours tested independently.
Wearing and care
Dur-e-Najaf is traditionally set in silver and commonly worn on the right hand. Wash it with mild soap and water to keep it clear, and store it away from harder stones. For advice on a silver setting, message us on WhatsApp.
