Known in Urdu as Zabarjad
Natural Peridot (Zabarjad) Stone in Pakistan
Zabarjad, as peridot is called in Urdu and Arabic, is a bright olive to lime-green gem, and Pakistan has a real claim to it: some of the finest peridot in the world comes from high in the Kohistan mountains. Each peridot at Authentic Gems is one stone, photographed as it is and priced on its own. Peridot is normally sold untreated.

Peridot from Kohistan
When large, clean peridot crystals turned up in Kohistan, they changed the world market for this gem. Pakistani peridot is known for a bright, pure green with very little brown, and it often comes in larger clean sizes than material from elsewhere. Peridot is also mined in the United States, China and Myanmar, often in smaller or more yellowish stones. If we know a stone's origin, the listing says so.
The mineral
Peridot is gem-quality olivine, a magnesium-iron silicate formed deep underground and pushed to the surface by volcanic and mountain-building forces. Iron gives it its colour, which is why it only ever comes in green, from yellowish to deep olive. It rates about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale.
Choosing a Zabarjad
- Colour - a vivid, pure green with just a touch of yellow is the most valued; brownish or very yellow stones cost less.
- Clarity - fine peridot is usually eye-clean. Small disc-shaped inclusions called "lily pads" are natural, but they lower the value if you can see them.
- Cut - good proportions bring out its oily, glowing lustre.
- Size - above a few carats, clean Kohistan-quality stones get much rarer and the per-carat rate rises.

A simple authenticity check
Peridot is strongly doubly refractive. Look down through the top of a faceted stone with a 10x loupe and the back facet edges often appear doubled, something glass cannot do. Green glass also tends to look flat and may show round bubbles. Green tourmaline and other green gems can resemble peridot, so our authenticity page explains how we tell them apart.
Birthstone and beliefs
Peridot is the August birthstone. Traditions differ on its planet: some South Asian astrologers link it with Mercury (Budh), sometimes as a substitute for emerald, while others connect it with the Sun. It is traditionally worn, often in gold, for well-being, positivity and fresh starts. These are beliefs, not guaranteed outcomes.
Care
Peridot is reasonably hard but dislikes sudden temperature changes and strong acids. Clean it in warm soapy water and skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
