Natural Australian Opal in Pakistan
When gem dealers talk about the best opal in the world, they usually mean Australian: black opal, boulder opal, white opal and crystal opal all come from its fields. Each stone here is a single natural opal, photographed as it is and priced on its own, and any doublet or triplet is clearly called one. You can compare it with Ethiopian opal in our opal collection.

Australian Opal stones
The four main types
Black opal
A dark grey to black body that makes the colour look intense. It is the rarest and most valued type, and Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is its best-known field.
Boulder opal
Thin seams of opal formed inside ironstone in Queensland and cut with the brown host rock left on the back. The ironstone is part of the natural stone, so boulder opal counts as solid opal, not a doublet, and every piece has its own shape.
White (light) opal
A milky white to pale grey body with softer, pastel flashes. It is the most common Australian type and a sensible everyday pick.
Crystal opal
A transparent to semi-transparent body that lets colour glow from deep inside.
Doublets and triplets, always named
Good opal often forms in very thin seams, so some Australian opal is cut as an assembled stone.
- A doublet is a thin slice of natural opal glued to a dark backing such as black glass, ironstone or potch.
- A triplet adds a clear dome of quartz or glass on top to protect the slice.
Both contain real opal, but they are worth far less than solid opal and must never be soaked, because the glue can give way. Any assembled stone we list says doublet or triplet in its title. To check for yourself, look at the side for a straight, even join line; solid opal and boulder opal show a natural, uneven back.
What decides the price
Brightness comes first, then the colours on show (red is rarest), the pattern, how dark the body is, and finally size and soundness. A dark body with bright red flashes is the top of the market. Divide any listing's price by its weight for the per-carat rate, or start from our shop page to browse by budget.
Wearing Australian opal
Most Australian opal is non-hydrophane and stable, so it copes with daily life better than many Ethiopian stones. It is still soft, about 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, so a bezel setting suits a ring, and it should be kept away from heat and knocks. Opal is an October birthstone and is traditionally linked with Venus (Shukra) in South Asian astrology; these are beliefs, not promised effects.
