Natural Ethiopian Opal in Pakistan
If you want a lot of colour from an opal without paying Australian black-opal money, Ethiopian opal is usually where we point people. Mined mostly in Welo (Wollo) province, it is natural precious opal with bright play of colour on a white, cream or clear body. Each stone here is a single natural opal, photographed as it is and priced on its own. It sits within our wider opal collection, next to Australian opal.

What sets Welo opal apart
Most Ethiopian opal comes from volcanic rock in the Welo region, discovered around the turn of the twenty-first century. Next to classic Australian opal it often shows broad, bright flashes on a light body, and many stones show colour from every angle. That brightness at a fair cost has made it a favourite first opal for buyers in Pakistan.
Hydrophane opal and water
Many Welo opals are hydrophane, meaning slightly porous and able to absorb water. When that happens the stone can turn clear or cloudy and its colour may fade for a while. Left to dry slowly at room temperature, usually over a few days, it normally goes back to how it looked. This is a natural property, not a fault, but it does decide how you look after it.
- Do not soak it, and take it off before wuzu, bathing, washing up or swimming.
- Keep oils, perfume, creams and soap away, as a porous stone can soak them in and stain.
- Clean it with a soft, dry or barely damp cloth, never an ultrasonic cleaner or steam.
- Avoid strong heat and sudden temperature changes.
Choosing an Ethiopian opal
Brightness and colours
How bright the play of colour is matters most. Red and orange flashes are rarer than blue and green, and a stone showing several colours at once ranks higher.
Pattern and body
Big, rolling flashes and named patterns such as harlequin or honeycomb add value. A clear "crystal" body lets colour glow from within, while a white body gives a softer look. Dark Welo bodies exist but are unusual, so ask whether a dark stone has been smoke-treated; we disclose this treatment when we know it.
Soundness
Turn the stone under a light and look for fine surface cracks, known as crazing. A sound, nicely domed cabochon is worth more than a flat or cracked one. To compare listings, divide price by carat weight.
Ethiopian or Australian?
Ethiopian opal gives strong colour on a lighter body and needs care around water. Australian opal is generally non-hydrophane, steadier in daily wear, and includes dark and black opal. Compare both in our opal collection. For a soft glow without play of colour, look at moonstone or labradorite.
Opal in tradition
Opal is an October birthstone, and in South Asian astrology it is traditionally linked with Venus (Shukra), usually set in silver or white gold. These are beliefs, not promised effects. Our guide to wearing opal goes into more detail.
