A family of stones

"Garnet" is the name for a group of related silicate minerals that share one crystal structure but differ in chemistry and colour. These are the ones you are most likely to find with us:

• Almandine - deep wine-red to brownish red, the classic garnet look.
• Pyrope - a purer, fiery red that can run very dark.
• Rhodolite - bright raspberry-pink to purplish red, lively and popular in jewellery.
• Hessonite (Gomed) - honey, cinnamon or orange-brown, with a typical syrupy swirl inside under a loupe.

Is garnet a kind of ruby?

The name Yaqoot Surkh leads some people to think so, but no. Ruby (Yaqoot) is corundum, harder at 9 on the Mohs scale and much rarer. Comparing stones

For red garnets, pay for a bright, saturated colour that does not turn blackish indoors; very dark stones can look almost black in dim rooms. Clarity is usually good, so visible inclusions should mean a lower price. A well-cut stone returns more light and shows its colour better. With hessonite, a warm, glowing orange and good transparency are what to look for. Divide price by carat weight to compare per-carat rates.

Natural garnet or a copy?

Garnet feels cool and heavy for its size, and under magnification often shows tiny needles or crystals. Red glass looks flat, warms quickly and may hold round bubbles. Beliefs around garnet and Gomed

Garnet is the January birthstone and is traditionally linked with energy, passion and protection. In Vedic astrology hessonite (Gomed) is the stone of Rahu, customarily set in silver or panchdhatu and worn on the middle finger, and only after an astrologer's advice. These are beliefs and customs, not guaranteed outcomes.

Care

Garnet is tough enough for rings. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and avoid sudden temperature changes.
