What a lab looks for in topaz

Irradiation and heat: nearly all blue topaz has been irradiated and heated, and some pink topaz is heated from another colour.
Coatings: thin surface layers used to create rainbow effects or very strong colours.
Identity: telling topaz apart from citrine, aquamarine, yellow sapphire and glass.
Synthetics: uncommon in topaz, but still checked.
