June Birthstone: Pearl (Moti) and Moonstone Guide جون
In short: For June we stock pearl (moti) and moonstone, two soft white gems that glow instead of sparkle. Pearl grows inside a mollusc and is organic; moonstone is a feldspar with a drifting blue-white sheen. Pearl is best for gentle, occasional wear, while moonstone is a bit tougher and copes better in a ring worn every day.
We carry two June birthstones: pearl, or moti, and moonstone. Both are soft white gems that glow rather than flash. A pearl is organic, grown inside a mollusc. Moonstone is a feldspar with a floating blue-white sheen. Keep pearl for gentle, occasional wear; moonstone is a little tougher and handles an everyday ring better.

Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
A little history
Pearls rank among the very first gems anyone wore, and for centuries the Gulf was famous for its pearl divers. Moonstone gets its name from the soft, moonlit glow that drifts across it. Vedic astrology gives the pearl to the Moon, Chandra, and moonstone is traditionally tied to the Moon as well. The modern list also adds alexandrite as a third stone for June.
Picking a pearl
- Lustre comes first. A good moti gives back sharp, bright reflections. A chalky or dull pearl usually means thin nacre or low quality.
- Check the skin. One or two tiny marks are normal. Deep pits or nacre that is peeling are not.
- Think about shape. Round pearls command the most. Ovals and baroque shapes cost less and have a charm of their own.
Before buying, message us on WhatsApp and ask whether a particular pearl is natural or cultured; we will tell you straight. You can also read what decides a pearl's price.
Picking a moonstone
Hold it and tilt it slowly. The sheen should slide across the dome as the stone moves. The most sought-after moonstones have a blue sheen over an almost transparent body; a white sheen on a milky body is more common and more affordable. Take a look at our moonstone and pearl, or set them beside the bolder colour flash of labradorite.
Telling real from imitation
- Run the pearl lightly along the edge of your tooth. A real one feels faintly gritty, while glass and plastic feel smooth.
- On a drilled bead, look closely at the hole. If a coating is lifting away from a glass or shell core, it is an imitation.
- Opalite is a glass often passed off as moonstone. It glows blue and orange from every angle with no moving sheen, and bubbles are common.
Keeping them nice
Pearl is soft, only 2.5–4.5 on the Mohs scale, and acids damage it. Make it the last thing you put on, after perfume, attar, hairspray and make-up, and wipe it with a soft cloth when you take it off. Moonstone is 6–6.5 and has cleavage, so protect it from hard knocks. Store both away from harder stones that could scratch them. See keeping moonstone's glow and choosing pearl or moonstone.
June gifts
Moti has always been part of Pakistani bridal jewellery, from long moti malas to pearl-drop jhumkay, so one good pearl is a fitting gift for a bride or for mooh dikhai. Moonstone sits well with light summer clothes and suits a June birthday. Either one makes a gentle Eid present for a mother or a daughter.
