Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral, and you know it the moment you see it: bands of pale and dark green, often curling into rings and "eyes". That instantly recognisable look is exactly what the copies try to imitate. For a first purchase, three things matter. Learn to read the bands, accept that the stone is soft, and know how to look after it.
Reading the bands
Malachite grows layer by layer, so its pattern is a record of how it formed. On a natural piece you should see:
- bands that change in width and shade, from light mint to an almost black green;
- circles, swirls or ribbons that are irregular, not perfectly repeated;
- a fine, silky sheen on a well-polished surface.
The best-looking stones have crisp contrast between the light and dark bands, with the pattern sitting nicely on the finished shape.
Copies and how to catch them
Reconstituted malachite
This is crushed malachite held together with resin. The banding often looks too even or a little blurry, and under a loupe it can appear dull, with small specks of resin.
Plastic and glass
Printed or moulded patterns often repeat exactly. Plastic feels warm and light in the hand, and glass may show bubbles.
Dyed stone
You see this less, but colour that collects in cracks instead of following the bands is a red flag.
Real malachite feels quite heavy for its size, which helps tell it from plastic. Ask the seller to confirm in writing that the stone is natural and solid.
It is soft, so use it accordingly
Malachite is only 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale. Even ordinary household dust can scratch it. It does best in pendants, earrings or a ring worn now and then, and it should be kept on its own in a soft pouch.
Care
- Clean only with a soft cloth, dry or barely damp.
- Keep it away from acids such as lemon juice, vinegar and many household cleaners. Malachite reacts with acid.
- No heat, no ultrasonic cleaner, no steam.
- Put it on after your perfume and creams, not before.
Is it safe?
Polished malachite is perfectly safe to wear. Its dust, though, contains copper and should not be breathed in, which is why cutters always work it wet. Do not sand, drill or recut malachite at home.
Malachite and Shukra
In South Asian practice malachite is connected with Venus (Shukra) and worn for protection and emotional balance. These are traditional beliefs, not guaranteed results. See our rashi guide for more.
