Four quick checks for a quiet, everyday stone

Safed Aqeeq Made Simple: A First Buyer's Checklist

In short: For a good white agate (safed aqeeq), look for an even milky white with no grey, yellow or brown staining, a soft translucency that glows against the light, no hairline cracks, and a smooth glassy polish. Milky glass is the usual fake: it shows round bubbles under a loupe and warms almost at once in the hand.

Safed aqeeq, or white agate, is a calm, milky stone, and a lot of people in Pakistan wear it in a daily ring. It is inexpensive, and that is exactly why it deserves a minute of your attention. A cheap stone that turns out to be glass is still money thrown away. Here is everything a first-time buyer needs to check.

What it should look like

White agate is chalcedony, which is quartz with a very fine grain. A good piece is softly translucent, a bit like milk with water added, not chalky and solid. Hold it to a light and it should glow gently. Sometimes you will see faint bands or cloudy shapes inside.

Four checks for a good stone

  1. Clean, even colour: a pure milky white, without grey, yellow or brown stains.
  2. Translucency: light should come through. A very opaque white stone looks flat once it is set.
  3. No cracks: hold it against the light and look for hairline cracks. They can spread over time.
  4. Polish and shape: a smooth, glassy surface and an even outline, with no chips along the edge.

Agate or glass?

Milky glass is the fake you will meet most often. Under a loupe, glass shows round bubbles, and it warms up almost straight away in your hand, while agate stays cool for longer. Some white stones are bleached or treated to make them whiter, and that should be declared. If a stone is flawless, perfectly even and cheap, look again. Ask the seller to put in writing that it is natural agate and whether it has been treated.

Wearing and cleaning

White agate is 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, which makes it a good daily ring stone. Being pale, it picks up dirt and skin oil, so give it a wash with mild soap and water from time to time. Keep it away from bleach and harsh chemicals.

Price

What drives the price is translucency, even colour and the absence of cracks, more than size. We price each stone separately.

Before you pay

Confirm three things: it is natural agate, any treatment is in writing, and the weight is for the cut stone. We check every stone ourselves and photograph each one alone. Browse white agate, or compare aquamarine and hematite. Our gem names page has Urdu and English names. Orders go out from Karachi with Cash on Delivery, to Lahore and every other city in Pakistan.
