The quick version: safed aqeeq is one of the gentler stones on the wallet, and the gap between a cheap piece and a dear one comes down to a few things you can check yourself. How even the white is, whether it glows when light passes through, whether there are cracks, and how well it is cut and polished. Size counts for less than it does with neelam or yaqoot, because big pieces of agate are easy to find. If a "white aqeeq" is priced far below everything else around it, treat that as a warning: bleached stone, dyed stone and milky glass are all sold under the same name.
Below is the price table from our own listings, with the lowest, typical and highest figure per stone, per carat and per ratti. After that we explain why two similar-looking white stones can be priced so differently, and how to compare quotes. If you are buying white agate for the first time and want to know what a good one looks like, read choosing white agate alongside this. Here we stick to value.
White agate prices from our listings
| Weight | Weights | Stones | Per carat | Per ratti |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All White Agate in stock | 20.8 – 22.4 ct | 11 | Rs 140 – Rs 150 | Rs 130 – Rs 140 |
Every stone in our white agate collection is a single natural piece, photographed by itself and priced by itself, so the table gives you a real spread rather than one flat rate. If you want to see how white agate sits against other stones, the gemstone price guide covers the whole range.
First, what you are actually buying
Agate is chalcedony with bands or patterns in it, and chalcedony is quartz built from crystals too small to see. It sits at about 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, which makes it a sensible everyday stone. White agate runs from milky, almost porcelain stones to translucent ones with a soft inner glow, and some show faint grey or cream banding. Most of what we see in Pakistan goes into men's silver rings as safed aqeeq, though pendants and tasbih strings are popular too. For aqeeq in every colour, browse the aqeeq collection or read aqeeq price in Pakistan.
The seven things that set the price
1. How clean and even the white is
This is where we look first. The best white agate is the same clean white, or the same soft milky white, from edge to edge, with no grey clouds, brown specks or yellowish areas. Patchy or dull colour pulls the price down quickly. Our simple test: put the stone on a sheet of white paper next to a window in daylight. A good one still reads as white. A poorer one suddenly looks grey.
2. Translucency and that inner glow
Hold the stone up to a bulb or your phone torch. Most buyers we deal with want a stone that lets some light in and seems lit from inside, rather than one that looks flat and chalky. An even glow usually puts a stone in the upper part of the range. Fully opaque stones are the cheaper end unless the white is unusually pure.
3. Cracks and pits
Agate is a tough material, but natural cracks, small pits and rough spots turn up often. A crack that reaches the surface is the single biggest reason a white agate is cheap. It traps dirt and a hard knock can make it run further. A couple of small natural pits on the back of the stone matter much less than a mark on the dome, which is the part everyone sees.
4. Cut and polish
Nearly all white agate is cut en cabochon: a smooth dome on top, with a flat or gently rounded back. You are paying for a symmetrical outline, an even dome and a polish you can almost see your face in. A lopsided oval, a dome that is too flat, or a slightly hazy surface all bring the value down. Faceted white agate does exist, but it is uncommon, and there the cutting quality matters far more than the weight.
5. Size and shape
Men's ring stones in white agate usually run from around ten carats to well over twenty. Our 20.80-carat white agate and 21.15-carat white agate are typical ring sizes. Since large rough is plentiful, the price per carat does not jump with size the way it does with neelam. Oval is what most people ask for, with rectangles and cushions close behind.
6. Natural colour or altered colour
Some white agate is bleached to strip out brown or grey tints. Some "white aqeeq" is dyed, and some is simply milky glass. Untreated natural stone is worth more than any of these. We state any treatment we know about on each listing. To learn the tell-tale signs, read spotting dyed and glass aqeeq.
7. Claims about where it came from
You will hear "Yemeni" used to justify a higher price. Some customers value Yemeni aqeeq for traditional reasons, but proving the origin of a single agate is very hard, and plenty of stones sold as Yemeni were mined somewhere else. Price the stone on what you can see and treat any origin claim as something to question, not pay for. The differences people look for are covered in Yemeni vs Iranian aqeeq.
Per piece, per carat or per ratti?
In most bazaars agate changes hands per piece, while precious stones are quoted per carat or per ratti. A few sellers do quote aqeeq per ratti, mostly for ring stones or stones bought on astrological advice. If you get a per-ratti quote, keep these in mind:
- The gemstone ratti is 0.91 carat, roughly 0.182 g.
- The sunari (jeweller's) ratti is about 0.61 carat. So "twenty ratti" could mean about 18.2 carats or about 12.2 carats, depending on who is talking.
- To turn a per-carat price into a per-ratti price, multiply by 0.91.
The carat to ratti converter will do the arithmetic for you. Bring every quote to a price per carat for similar sizes, then compare quality.
Comparing two quotes, step by step
- Use one unit. Turn per-piece and per-ratti prices into per-carat figures for stones of a similar size.
- Use one light. Look at both stones in daylight. Warm yellow or bluish shop lights make every white stone look better than it is.
- Hunt for cracks. Roll each stone under a phone torch. A crack shows up as a thin bright line.
- Ask about treatment. A bleached or dyed stone should cost less, and the seller should say so.
- Separate the stone from the ring. For a finished ring, ask for the stone price on its own, apart from the silver weight and making charge. See aqeeq ring price in Pakistan.
- Count the returns policy as value. Checking at your door and a 7-day return are worth something.
Shopping by budget
Our shop has price filters, and because white agate is an affordable stone, the lower bands are where most people should start looking.
- The lowest price band: the natural starting point for an everyday ring stone. Our list of natural gemstones on a small budget shows other choices in this band.
- The second band: bigger or noticeably finer stones, plus white agate already set in silver.
- The third band and the top band: white agate on its own rarely reaches here. At these levels the money is usually going into a heavy setting, gold, or other stones.
These bands are rough guides; the table above shows the real spread.
White stones that get mixed up with white agate
Knowing the neighbours helps you judge a price. Moonstone has a moving blue-white sheen that white agate never shows, and its price follows that sheen. Dur-e-najaf is transparent quartz, clear rather than milky. White chalcedony is very close to white agate but has no banding; see judging chalcedony. Milky glass is the cheapest of the lot and is regularly passed off as white aqeeq. When two white stones differ wildly in price, find out which of these you are holding first. For more white gems, see white and colourless gemstones.
Looking after it so it keeps its value
A white stone shows every bit of dirt, and a stained white agate looks cheaper than it really is. Agate is slightly porous, so hair oil, hair dye, mehndi, attar and even strong chai can work into the surface and leave a yellow or grey cast over the years. Take the ring off before mehndi, oiling your hair or putting on cream. To clean it, use lukewarm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft brush, then let it dry completely. Keep bleach away from it: it can damage the silver and may change a treated stone.
Keep white agate in its own soft pouch. It is hard enough to scratch softer stones, and harder ones like neelam or topaz can scratch it. A dull old stone can usually be re-polished by a lapidary. Our gemstone care guide covers cleaning, and the stone setting service can help if you want an old stone put into a new ring.
Safed aqeeq and tradition
Aqeeq has a long history in Muslim households across the subcontinent, and many men wear an aqeeq ring in silver. Many families connect white aqeeq in particular with calm and purity. These are customs and beliefs, and they do not change what a stone is worth on the market. For any religious question, ask a scholar you trust. Our aqeeq for men page explains the silver ring custom.
