Natural colour, inner glow and finish: the three things that matter

What Sets the Price of Yellow Agate (Zard Aqeeq) in Pakistan

In short: The price of yellow agate (zard aqeeq) depends mostly on whether its colour is natural or dyed, how warmly it glows when held to light, how even the colour is, and the quality of its shape and polish. A smaller bright stone can be worth more than a large dull one. Watch for yellow glass, which shows bubbles.

Yellow agate, which we sell as zard aqeeq, is one of the gentler aqeeq stones on the pocket. Even so, two stones that look similar in a photo can be priced quite differently. Almost all of that gap comes down to three questions: is the colour natural, how much does the stone glow, and how well was it finished? Here is how we answer them.

Is the colour natural or dyed?

This makes the biggest difference. Natural yellow agate is usually a soft honey, lemon or golden shade, often with gentle shifts in tone and faint banding. A very bright, flat, almost neon yellow is nearly always dyed. Dyed agate is common and is not a problem in itself, but it should cost less and be sold as dyed. Under a loupe, dye tends to gather along cracks and at the edges of bands.

Does it glow?

Hold the stone up to a light. Good yellow agate is translucent and lights up warmly from inside. Flat, opaque stones look lifeless once set, and they are priced lower.

Is the colour even?

An even colour across the face, or attractive banding sitting in the right place, adds value. Blotches, grey areas and dark spots take it away.

Finish and size

A symmetrical shape, a smooth glassy polish and clean, unchipped edges all count. Size matters too, but a big dull stone is usually worth less than a smaller bright one.

Do not get caught by glass

Yellow glass is the usual imitation. Under magnification it shows round bubbles, and it warms quickly in your palm while agate stays cool. A flawless, perfectly even and very cheap stone deserves a second look. Ask the seller to write that it is natural agate and whether it has been dyed.

Wearing it

Yellow agate is 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, so it is fine in a ring worn daily. Clean it with mild soap and water and keep harsh chemicals away, as they can affect dyed stones.

Before you pay

Make sure the stone is natural, any treatment is in writing and the weight is the cut stone's weight. We check every stone and photograph each one on its own, so you can judge its colour and glow from the listing. Browse yellow agate, or compare bloodstone and jade. Common questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

What is yellow agate called in Urdu?

It is usually sold as zard aqeeq.

Is very bright yellow agate dyed?

Bright, uniform, almost neon yellow is usually dyed. Natural yellow agate tends to be a softer honey or golden shade.

Is a larger yellow agate always more expensive?

Not always. Colour, glow and finish matter more, so a small bright stone can be worth more than a big dull one.

How do I tell yellow agate from glass?

Glass shows round bubbles under a loupe and warms quickly in your hand, while agate stays cool for longer.
