What a lab looks at in amethyst
- Natural or lab-grown: hydrothermal synthetic quartz is picked out from twinning patterns under polarised light and from infrared spectroscopy.
- Heating: heat turns amethyst yellow, and it is then sold as citrine; for golden stones the lab can comment on this.
- Dye: crackled quartz dyed purple turns up, mostly as beads.
- Look-alikes: purple glass and purple sapphire are separated by refractive index.
Asking for a report
Choose a stone from our amethyst collection and message us its link on WhatsApp. We will explain how that particular stone would be tested, and the report reaches you before you pay a rupee. You can do the same with citrine, purple sapphire and kunzite. There is more on our lab-certified gemstones page.
