Kunzite is a soft pink to lilac stone with a clean, glassy sparkle, and it is one of the gems our side of the world does well: fine material comes from Afghanistan and northern Pakistan. The mineral
Kunzite is the pink-to-violet form of spodumene. Yellow to greenish-yellow spodumene is also cut as a gem and occasionally sits alongside it. Spodumene grows as large, clear crystals, which is why kunzite is often available in bigger sizes with good clarity. Brazil is another well-known source.
Two things to know before buying
Colour depends on the angle
Kunzite is strongly pleochroic. Looking down the length of the crystal it is a deeper pink; from the sides it is paler. A skilled cutter orients the stone so the best colour faces up. When you compare listings, judge how even and strong the colour looks from the top.
It dislikes strong sun and hard knocks
Long exposure to bright sunlight can fade kunzite, which is why it is sometimes called an "evening stone". It also has perfect cleavage, so a sharp knock can split it despite a hardness of 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. It is lovely in pendants and earrings, and in rings worn with some care.
How kunzite is valued
The deepest, most saturated pinks and violets are worth the most; very pale stones are more affordable. Kunzite is expected to be clean, so visible inclusions bring the price down. A well-oriented, lively cut matters a great deal with this stone, and large clean pieces carry a higher per-carat rate. Some kunzite is treated to deepen its colour, and we say so when we know. To compare, divide price by carat weight.
Is it genuine?
Natural kunzite feels cool and visibly changes colour intensity as you turn it. Pink glass looks the same from every angle and may hold round bubbles. Pink topaz and tourmaline can look similar, so for a valuable stone independent testing is worthwhile. Our authenticity page explains how we check ours.
Kunzite and belief
Kunzite was only named in the early twentieth century, so it has no planet or finger in the old astrological systems. Modern crystal lore calls it a "stone of the heart", believed to encourage love, calm and emotional healing. These are beliefs, not guaranteed effects.
Care
Store it away from sunlight, clean it only with lukewarm soapy water, and never put it in an ultrasonic or steam cleaner.
