About this stone
Everything we know about it
Description
Pakistani bazaars stretch the word pukhraj to cover more than one stone, and this listing shows how. It is a blue topaz of 9.75 carats, sold under that broad trade name. If you were expecting the yellow pukhraj that astrologers usually mean, please read on before ordering, because they are different gems at very different prices.
What you are actually buying
Blue topaz gets its colour from irradiation followed by heating. That is routine for this stone and is done long before it reaches a dealer, and the blue it produces is stable in normal wear. Topaz rates 8 on the Mohs scale, so everyday dust will not harm it and it suits a ring as well as a pendant. A firm knock along its cleavage plane can chip it, though, so a protective bezel makes sense in a ring.

Cash on Delivery lets you open the parcel and see the stone before paying; Karachi usually takes 1–2 working days, other cities 2–4, and you have 7 days to return it. Read our blue topaz guide first.
This particular stone
This listing is one natural blue topaz with a weight of 9.75 Carat. Its price is Rs. 12,750 — roughly Rs. 1,308 for each carat. Origin: Pakistan. Treatment: treatment not tested. Quote reference AG-00068 when you message us about it. The photographs show this exact stone, so what arrives at your door is the piece you chose on screen.
From six carats up a stone becomes the centre of attention. It wants a broader shank or a secure claw setting and suits an occasion ring, a signet or a centre pendant. Clean natural material of this size turns up far less often, and the per-carat rate reflects that.
On the Mohs scale blue topaz rates 8. Few materials will scratch it, so it copes well with everyday ring wear. A soak in warm water with a drop of mild soap and a soft brush keeps it bright; skip the ultrasonic cleaner if inclusions reach the surface.
Whoever you buy blue topaz from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every blue topaz for those three points before it is listed, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.
