About this stone
Everything we know about it
Description
We get a lot of questions about lapis lazuli. These come up most often for this 6.55 carat piece, a deep blue cabochon with a soft dusting of pyrite.
Why does it have so little gold?
Pyrite is spread unevenly through lapis, so every stone differs. Some people want lots of visible gold; others prefer a calmer, bluer face. This one sits on the quiet side, which suits a plain setting.
Is lapis hard enough for a ring?
It rates 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale, which is soft. A ring is possible if the stone sits in a deep bezel and you take it off for rough work. A pendant is the safer choice.
Has it been treated?
Lapis is sometimes dyed or waxed, and we will tell you what we know if you ask. Message us on WhatsApp quoting GSN-LL-05. Independent lab testing is your choice.
How do I clean it?
A soft damp cloth, then dry it. No soaking and no ultrasonic cleaners.
How do I pay?
Cash on Delivery, after opening the parcel and checking the stone. Karachi usually receives orders in 1 to 2 working days and other cities in 2 to 4, with 7 days to return it unused. Other options are listed under lapis lazuli. Before you choose, read our lapis lazuli guide.
This particular stone
This listing is one natural lapis lazuli, known in Urdu as Lajward, with a weight of 6.55 Carat. Its price is Rs. 2,480 — roughly Rs. 379 for each carat. Treatment: treatment not tested. Quote reference GSN-LL-05 when you message us about it. The photographs show this exact stone, so what arrives at your door is the piece you chose on screen.
From six carats up a stone becomes the centre of attention. It wants a broader shank or a secure claw setting and suits an occasion ring, a signet or a centre pendant. Clean natural material of this size turns up far less often, and the per-carat rate reflects that.
On the Mohs scale lapis lazuli rates 5 to 6. That makes it soft for a gemstone, better suited to pendants, earrings and rings for special occasions than to a daily ring. Keep it away from perfume, cleaning products, steam and ultrasonic cleaners, and polish it with a dry, soft cloth after wear.
Whoever you buy lapis lazuli from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every lapis lazuli for those three points before it is listed, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.
