Description

At 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale, garnet sits above quartz and well clear of the softer stones people often wear in rings. For this 6.25 carat piece, that makes daily wear realistic. A ring will meet keys, steering wheels and handshakes without collecting the fine haze of scratches that dulls softer red stones.

It also has no cleavage direction waiting to split, so the usual warnings about protecting corners matter less than they do with kunzite or labradorite. A plain bezel or four claws will do the job.

The stone

This garnet is eye-clean, meaning no inclusions show to the naked eye. That is normal for garnet rather than rare, so colour matters more to its value than clarity. A handy test is to look at it in dim light: the red should hold, rather than drifting into brown or black.

Care and storage

Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush are plenty. Keep it in a pouch of its own.

Message us on WhatsApp quoting GSN-GT-05 with any questions, including what we know of its treatment; independent lab testing is your choice. See the other stones in the garnet range.

Nothing is paid until you have opened the parcel and seen the stone. Karachi deliveries usually take 1 to 2 working days and other cities 2 to 4, with 7 days to return it unused. Before you choose, read our garnet guide.

This particular stone

This listing is one natural garnet with a weight of 6.25 Carat. Its price is Rs. 7,500 — roughly Rs. 1,200 for each carat. Treatment: treatment not tested. Quote reference GSN-GT-05 when you message us about it. The photographs show this exact stone, so what arrives at your door is the piece you chose on screen.

From six carats up a stone becomes the centre of attention. It wants a broader shank or a secure claw setting and suits an occasion ring, a signet or a centre pendant. Clean natural material of this size turns up far less often, and the per-carat rate reflects that.

On the Mohs scale garnet rates 7 to 7.5. It handles daily wear, but a hard knock can still nick an exposed corner, so a protective setting is a sensible choice. Clean it with warm soapy water and a soft brush, and keep it away from abrasive cleaners and high heat.

Whoever you buy garnet from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every garnet for those three points before it is listed, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.

Questions about this stone

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

Is this garnet natural and untreated?

Yes. Garnet is one of the few gemstones that is not routinely treated — it is not heated like sapphire and ruby, not oiled like emerald, and not dyed or filled. This stone is natural and untreated, and we will state that on the invoice.

Can a 6.25 carat garnet be worn in a ring?

Yes, easily. At this weight it sets into a normal shank and, at 7 to 7.5 on the Mohs scale with no cleavage, garnet handles daily wear better than most coloured stones.

How do I know it is garnet and not ruby or glass?

Ruby fluoresces under a UV torch and garnet does not, which separates the two in seconds. Glass gives itself away by warmth to the touch, rounded facet edges and trapped round bubbles. Every stone we list is hand-inspected, and with Cash on Delivery you can have it checked at a local laboratory before you pay.

What is garnet worn for in South Asian tradition?

Garnet is linked to Rahu and is traditionally worn for clarity of purpose and protection from confusion, and it is often chosen as an affordable alternative to hessonite (gomed). These are traditional beliefs rather than guaranteed outcomes — if you are buying for astrological reasons, agree the stone, weight and finger with an experienced astrologer first.
