Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
The stones, and where the beliefs come from
Moti and moonstone
In Vedic astrology the Moon governs the mind and its moods. That is why pearl and moonstone, both Moon stones, are worn by people hoping for a steadier temper.
Zamurd
Emerald belongs to Budh, or Mercury, the planet of speech, learning and a quick mind. Families sometimes give one to a student before exams.
Jamunia
Amethyst comes from a Greek word meaning "not drunk", and for centuries the stone was tied to a sober, clear head. In Vedic practice amethyst is also accepted as a substitute for Neelam.
Beruj and Lajward
Old sailors' stories connected aquamarine with calm water. Lapis lazuli was treasured in Persia, and folk belief links it with clear thinking.
Picking the right one
- Something to wear every day: amethyst or aquamarine. Both are hard, 7 to 8 on the Mohs scale, and easy to find in different sizes.
- Following an astrologer: pearl or emerald, chosen from your chart.
- If you love deep blue: lapis. It is softer, around 5–5.5, so it is happier in a pendant than a ring.
Emerald nearly always has natural inclusions and is usually oiled. Our emerald guide tells you what is normal.
The customs around wearing them
A pearl is usually set in silver and put on for the first time on a Monday, on the little finger. Emerald is typically set in gold or silver and first worn on a Wednesday, again on the little finger. Amethyst, aquamarine and lapis have no fixed Vedic rules, so people wear them however they like, as a ring or pendant, or simply keep a loose stone on the study table.
All of this is belief passed down through families and traditions. None of it is a promise, and no stone can guarantee a result. Pick a stone you like the look of and can comfortably afford, and enjoy the tradition as part of what it means to you.
