Cancer Gemstones: Moti (Pearl) and Moonstone برج سرطان
In short: Cancer, called Kark in Vedic astrology, is ruled by the Moon, which is why pearl (Moti) is its traditional stone. Moonstone is the accepted substitute. Pearl counts among the gentler stones in the tradition, so many families give it without a full reading. Customarily it is set in silver, worn on the little finger, and first put on on a Monday morning.

Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
The main stone: Moti (pearl)
Pearl belongs to the Moon, or Chandra, which tradition connects with the mind, the emotions, the mother and a calm temperament. It is an organic, soft gem, and its glow, known as lustre, comes from layer upon layer of nacre. You can browse loose pearl in our shop.
The substitute: moonstone
Moonstone stands in for pearl. Buyers look for its drifting blue or white sheen, called adularescence. Many readings also allow pearl to be worn alongside yellow sapphire (Pukhraj), one of the combinations the tradition commonly accepts.
Wearing pearl the traditional way
- Finger: the little finger.
- Metal: silver.
- Day: first put on on a Monday morning, the Moon's day.
Instead of a ring, a pendant that rests against the skin is an accepted option, and it is a popular way to wear pearl.
Checks before you buy pearl
- Ask whether the pearl is natural or cultured. Both have nacre, which shell beads and glass imitations lack.
- Rub the pearl very gently against a tooth: an imitation feels smooth, while a real pearl feels a little gritty.
- Look for crisp, bright lustre and a surface without dull patches.
- With moonstone, the sheen should move as you tilt the stone; glass "opalite" glows evenly all over instead.

Setting a budget
Pearl prices depend on nacre, lustre, shape and origin. Moonstone often turns up under the Under 5,000 and 5,000 to 20,000 filters, while pearls are best compared across 5,000 to 20,000 and 20,000 to 50,000.
Looking after it
Perfume, sweat and acids all harm pearl. Make it the last thing you put on, wipe it after wearing, and keep it away from harder stones. See our gemstone care guide and moonstone care.
Buying pearl and moonstone from Authentic Gems
Every stone is photographed as it really is and priced on its own, and we state any known treatment. Ask for a certificate if you want one, and independent lab testing can be arranged. Pay Cash on Delivery anywhere in Pakistan: open the parcel, check the stone, then pay the rider. Orders go out within 1 working day of confirmation, and in Karachi they usually arrive in 1–2 working days; see our delivery details. Plenty of buyers want a round or nearly round pearl for a ring, so tell us the size you are after and we will show you what is listed.
Note that the dates above are Western sun-sign dates. Vedic practice takes your rashi from the sign the Moon was in at your birth, which is often different from your sun sign. Our rashi guide explains how to find yours.
