Simple habits that protect a heliotrope's polish

Looking After Bloodstone So the Green Stays Deep and the Red Stays Sharp

In short: Bloodstone care is mostly about keeping things off it, because this slightly porous chalcedony can be dulled by perfume, oils and strong chemicals. Wipe it with a soft cloth in lukewarm water with mild soap, rinse, pat dry and buff with microfibre. Avoid ultrasonic and steam cleaners, bleach, acids and soaking, and keep it in a pouch of its own.

Bloodstone, known in the books as heliotrope, is dark green chalcedony with red flecks of iron oxide running through it. It is a tough little stone. What makes it beautiful, though, is a deep mirror polish, and that polish is exactly what rough storage and strong cleaners wear away. A few habits will keep yours looking the way it did when you first unwrapped it.

What kind of stone you are dealing with

Bloodstone is chalcedony with patches of jasper, and it is a little porous. That is why scent, oils and harsh household chemicals can slowly work into the surface and leave it flat or patchy. Nearly all good bloodstone care comes down to one idea: stop things getting onto the stone, so you never have to scrub them off.

How it handles everyday wear

It rates 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, which is fine for a ring worn daily. The weak point is the rim of a cabochon, which can chip if it hits something hard. A bezel setting guards that edge. If you are lifting, repairing or doing any heavy work with your hands, take the ring off first.

A gentle cleaning routine

  1. Wipe the stone with a soft cloth dipped in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap.
  2. Rinse with clean water and pat it dry at once.
  3. Buff lightly with a dry microfibre cloth to bring the shine back up.

Keep it away from ultrasonic and steam cleaners, bleach, and acids such as lemon juice or vinegar. Never leave it soaking.

Storing it

Give it a soft pouch of its own. Harder stones like neelam or topaz will scratch it, and it will scratch anything softer than itself. When you get ready, put the ring on last, once cream, attar and hair products have dried.

Is your bloodstone genuine?

The usual substitute is dyed jasper, or some green stone with red dots painted on. In natural bloodstone the red spots vary in size and shape, sit inside the stone rather than on it, and often have soft, blurred edges. Dyed or painted spots tend to be too round, too evenly spaced, or slightly raised. Ask the seller to confirm in writing that the stone is natural and untreated.

Traditional meaning

In South Asian practice bloodstone belongs to Mars (Mangal) and is worn for strength and staying power. These are traditional beliefs, not guaranteed results. If an astrologer is guiding you, agree the weight and metal with them before anything is made; our rashi guide lists the common pairings.

Common questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

Is it safe to get bloodstone wet?

A quick rinse is fine. Just do not leave it soaking, and dry it straight away. Perfume and chemicals do more harm than water.

My bloodstone looks dull. What happened?

Most often it is a film of lotion or scent, or fine scratches from being stored with other jewellery. A gentle wash and a microfibre buff usually fix it; deep scratches need a jeweller to repolish.

Can bloodstone go in a ring?

Yes. At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale it handles daily wear, and a bezel setting protects its edge.

How do I spot fake bloodstone?

Real red spots are uneven and lie inside the stone. Spots that are perfectly round or sit on the surface point to dye or paint.
