Sulemani aqeeq is one of the most commonly worn stones in Pakistan. You will find it everywhere, from a tray on a bazaar pavement to a smart jeweller's counter, and the prices you get quoted swing wildly for stones that look almost the same at first glance. Most of that spread comes down to a few things you can check yourself: the bands, the colour, the finish, and whether the stone has been dyed.

On this page you will find current prices from our own listings, what pushes a Sulemani stone up or down, and how to compare per-ratti and per-piece quotes fairly. If you want to learn to judge band quality by eye, start with our article on what separates a fine Sulemani from a plain one.

What your money goes on

Sulemani agate is banded chalcedony, normally a dark brown or black ground crossed by crisp white lines. Some stones have straight parallel bands; others have rings that form an "eye". Agate isn't scarce, so you aren't paying for a rare material. You are paying for a good pattern, honest colour and careful cutting. That is good news, because it puts an attractive, natural Sulemani within reach of almost any budget.

Current Sulemani agate prices from our listings

We build this table from our own Sulemani agate listings and update it every month. It gives the lowest, typical and highest price per stone, with the same figures per carat and per ratti.

Sulemani Agate · October 2026 edition · PKR, from Authentic Gems listings. 1 ratti = 0.91 carat.

What moves the price

How good the bands are

This matters more than anything else. Crisp white bands with clean edges, strong contrast against an even dark ground, and a pattern that sits centred and balanced all push a stone up. Smudgy lines, weak contrast and random, broken patterns drag it down.

The kind of pattern

A well-formed eye, a set of rings centred on the face, is much sought after and usually costs more than a plain banded stone of the same size. Evenly spaced parallel bands across the whole face come next. A stone with a single white stripe, or bands only at one edge, sits lower.

Natural or dyed colour

Dyeing the dark layers of banded agate is an old and common practice, and a big share of the black-and-white agate on sale has been treated that way. It is stable and doesn't make the stone fake, but it does make it a different product. A natural-colour stone, often with a warmer brown ground and a little variation, should cost more than a dyed stone with a flat, jet-black ground. The seller ought to tell you which one you are buying.

Size and thickness

Bigger stones cost more in total, and large pieces with a clean, centred pattern are harder to cut, so the rate per carat creeps up a little with size. Thickness counts too. A thin slice can look fine from the top, but it chips more easily and doesn't sit well in a ring.

Cut and finish

Most Sulemani is cut as a cabochon or a flat-topped tablet. A symmetrical outline, an even polish without pits, and clean edges with no chips all add value. Carved stones, such as those engraved with calligraphy, cost extra for the work. Ask whether the engraving was done by hand or by machine, because the cost is different.

Talk of origin

Some sellers call stones "Yemeni Sulemani" or "old stock" and charge more for them. Agate with this look is mined in several countries, India, Brazil and Yemen among them, and the origin of agate is almost never tested. A place name by itself is no reason to pay more. Judge the pattern, colour and finish of the stone in front of you. Our article on Yemeni and Iranian aqeeq explains how origin talk works across the aqeeq trade.

Per ratti, per carat or per piece

In Pakistan, Sulemani agate is usually sold by the piece, since the pattern matters much more than the weight. Some dealers do quote per ratti, especially for ring stones bought on an astrologer's or an elder's advice. If that happens:

  • Ask which ratti. The gemstone ratti is 0.91 carat. The jeweller's sunari ratti is smaller, about 0.61 carat (0.1215 grams). A rate per sunari ratti looks lower than a rate per gemstone ratti for the very same stone, so check before you compare.
  • Convert to carats. Online listings use carats, and one carat is 0.2 grams. Our carat to ratti converter puts the two side by side.
  • Don't let weight decide. A heavy stone with a dull pattern can be worth less than a lighter one with a perfect eye. Use weight to compare stones of similar quality, not to rank them.

Comparing two quotes

  1. Is it the same product? Natural colour or dyed? Plain bands or an eye? Loose or set?
  2. Is the weight on the same basis? Bring both prices to per carat, after checking which ratti was used.
  3. Is the finish the same? Look for chipped edges, scratches and an uneven polish.
  4. Is it actually agate? Glass imitations show round bubbles under a loupe, and printed or painted bands sit only on the surface. Check that the pattern carries through to the sides and back.
  5. What is in writing? A bill that says "natural agate", and whether it is dyed, is worth more than a spoken promise.
  6. Can you send it back? A small premium for a return window is usually worth paying.

Loose stone or ready ring

Lots of people buy Sulemani already set in a silver ring. The price then covers three things: the stone, the silver by weight, and the jeweller's making charge. With a stone this affordable, the silver can easily cost as much as the stone, or more. Ask for each part to be priced separately, so you can see whether you are paying for a better stone or just a heavier ring. Our guides to the aqeeq ring price and silver rings with stones go into the setting side in more detail.

Pricing tricks to look out for

  • The "rare pattern" premium. A seller may tell you a pattern is one of a kind. Eyes and parallel bands are beautiful, but they aren't rare in Sulemani agate. Pay for how good the pattern looks, not for the story.
  • Photos of some other stone. A tray shot or a "sample" picture tells you nothing about the stone you will actually get. Since pattern is the whole value, insist on a photo or video of the exact piece.
  • Padding the weight. A very thick base adds weight, and therefore price when sold per ratti, without making the stone look any better from the top. Ask for the measurements as well as the weight.
  • Hidden repairs. A chipped edge can be reshaped or filled. Look closely around the girdle for uneven polish or a slightly different shine.
  • Ring weight. A heavier silver mount pushes the ring price up far more than a better stone would. Check the silver weight on the bill.

Pairs and matching sets

If you want two stones that match, for cufflinks, earrings, or rings for a father and son, expect to pay more than twice the price of one. Finding two agates with similar band spacing, contrast and colour means sorting through a lot of pieces. Ask the seller to photograph the pair side by side in daylight before you agree.

The name and the tradition

In popular belief the name Sulemani connects the stone with Prophet Sulaiman (peace be upon him), and many Muslim families in Pakistan wear it in a silver ring as a protective stone or out of family custom. These are traditions and beliefs; we don't promise any result, and for religious questions please ask a scholar you trust. Our Islamic gemstones page and protection stones page describe the wider tradition. None of this changes the price rules above: a stone worn for its meaning is still best bought on its pattern, colour and honesty.

Buying Sulemani agate from Authentic Gems

Common questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

What sets the price of a Sulemani agate?

Mostly the bands: crisp, high-contrast, well-centred patterns cost more. Natural colour, thickness and a clean polish come after that.

Where can I check current Sulemani agate prices?

The table on this page comes from our own listings and is updated monthly, with prices per stone, per carat and per ratti.

Is dyed Sulemani agate fake?

No. It is still natural agate with its dark layers coloured. It should be priced below a natural-colour stone, and the seller should say it is dyed.

Is a Yemeni Sulemani worth more?

Not because of the name. Agate's origin is almost never tested, so judge the pattern, colour and finish instead of the place name.

Do people buy Sulemani agate per ratti?

Usually it is sold by the piece, because pattern counts for more than weight. If a dealer quotes per ratti, ask whether it is the 0.91 carat gemstone ratti or the smaller sunari ratti.

Why does a Sulemani ring cost more than the stone alone?

The ring price adds silver by weight and a making charge. Ask for stone, metal and labour separately so you can see what you are paying for.
