How to keep a colourless topaz sparkling

White Topaz Care: Beating Grease, Guarding Against Chips

In short: White topaz keeps its sparkle with regular cleaning, since even a thin layer of skin oil or lotion behind the stone makes it look grey. Soak it in lukewarm soapy water, brush gently behind it and dry it. It is hard at 8 on the Mohs scale but has perfect cleavage, so take it off for heavy work and store it on its own.

Many people buy white topaz as a colourless gem that does not cost the earth, and a good one looks lovely. What catches owners off guard is how fast it can lose its sparkle, or a chip turning up on a stone they were told was hard. Both have plain explanations, and both are easy to handle once you understand them.

Why white topaz turns dull

A colourless stone lives on light going in and bouncing back out to your eye. A thin layer of skin oil, soap or cream on the back of the stone blocks that, and the gem starts to look grey and flat. You notice this far more on white topaz than on a coloured stone. The cure is nothing more than cleaning it often.

A cleaning routine that works

  • Let it sit for a few minutes in lukewarm water with a little mild soap.
  • Brush softly behind the stone with a soft toothbrush, since that is where grease builds up.
  • Rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth.
  • Keep it out of ultrasonic and steam cleaners, and away from sudden changes of temperature.

Hard, but not tough

Topaz is 8 on the Mohs scale, so scratches are not much of a worry. It does have perfect cleavage in one direction, though, which means a sharp knock can chip it or even split it. Take a white topaz ring off for heavy work and sport, and pick a setting that covers the corners.

Storage

Give it its own soft pouch. It will scratch softer stones, and neelam and diamond can scratch it.

Check it is actually topaz

The main look-alikes are white sapphire and cubic zirconia. Cubic zirconia throws strong rainbow flashes, called fire, far more than topaz, and it feels noticeably heavier. White sapphire is harder and usually a touch more brilliant. A gem tester or a lab will settle the question. Ask the seller to state in writing that the stone is natural topaz and whether it has been treated.

Price

With white topaz, price follows clarity, how free of colour the stone is and how well it is cut, and then size. We price every stone on its own.

Before you pay

Make sure the stone is natural, any treatment is written down and the weight is for the cut stone. We check every stone and photograph each one separately. Browse white topaz, or compare black agate and iron tiger eye. Our gem names page has Urdu and English names. Cash on Delivery reaches Karachi in about 1 to 2 working days, and Lahore and every other city soon after.

Common questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

Why has my white topaz gone cloudy?

Most likely skin oil or lotion has built up behind the stone and is blocking light. A soak in mild soapy water and a soft brush usually bring it back.

Will white topaz chip?

It can. At 8 on the Mohs scale it is hard, but its perfect cleavage means a sharp knock can chip or split it.

Is an ultrasonic cleaner safe for white topaz?

No. Vibration and heat can set off cleavage. Stick to mild soap, water and a soft brush.

How can I tell white topaz from cubic zirconia?

Cubic zirconia flashes far more rainbow fire and feels heavier in the hand. A gem tester will confirm which you have.

What is the best way to store white topaz?

In a soft pouch of its own, away from softer stones it might scratch and harder ones that might scratch it.
