White topaz comes down to clarity and cut. There is no colour to judge, so what you pay for is how clean the stone is and how well it gives light back. A crisp, eye-clean, well-cut white topaz sparkles and looks far more expensive than it is. A cloudy or poorly cut one looks like glass and should be priced that way. Size is a distant third, and matters less than most people expect.
In Pakistan, white topaz is mostly bought as an affordable natural colourless stone, often in place of diamond in a navratan, or as a clear ring stone to wear every day. Below we explain what moves its price, how it compares with the other clear stones you will be shown, how per-carat and per-ratti quotes work, and how to weigh one offer against another. Our own white topaz prices are in the table, updated monthly from our listings.
Our white topaz prices
This table comes from the white topaz we list. Each stone is photographed alone and priced on its own, so the numbers show the real spread: lowest, typical and highest per stone, then per carat and per ratti.
| Weight | Weights | Stones | Per carat | Per ratti |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 3 – 6 carat | 5.3 – 5.8 ct | 2 | Rs 450 – Rs 900 | Rs 410 – Rs 800 |
| 6 – 10 carat | 6.3 – 9.5 ct | 8 | Rs 900 – Rs 900 | Rs 800 – Rs 800 |
| Over 10 carat | 10.0 – 12.6 ct | 3 | Rs 900 – Rs 900 | Rs 800 – Rs 800 |
With white topaz the per-carat figure usually rises only gently from smaller to bigger stones, because clean rough is plentiful. The monthly gemstone price guide compares it with the other stones we sell.
What decides the price
Clarity
Judge this first. Topaz grows in large, clean crystals, so a faceted white topaz is expected to be clean to the eye. In a colourless stone every inclusion shows, because there is no colour to hide behind. Feathers, clouds or a crack you can see at arm's length should bring the price down a long way. Tiny inclusions only visible under a loupe are normal and hardly affect value.
Cut
Cut matters more here than for almost any coloured stone, because brilliance is all white topaz has. A well-cut stone is bright from edge to edge. A poorly cut one shows a dull, glassy window in the middle, or dark patches where light escapes out the back. In the video, look for even sparkle across the face and crisp facet edges. Precision-cut stones cost a little more and are worth it.
How colourless it really is
Most white topaz is genuinely colourless, but some carries a faint grey, blue or brownish tint, which shows best against white paper in daylight. A tinted stone should cost less than a truly colourless one.
Size
Clean colourless topaz is easy to find in large sizes, so the per-carat rate rises slowly with weight. A 10-carat stone doesn't cost much more per carat than a 5-carat one of the same quality. That makes white topaz one of the few natural stones where a big ring stone is genuinely affordable.
Treatment
White topaz is usually untreated. Its other big role in the market is as raw material: most blue topaz starts as colourless topaz that is irradiated and heated, and "mystic" rainbow topaz is colourless topaz with a surface coating. A plain white topaz should be natural and untreated, and the seller should be willing to say so in writing.
How it compares with other clear stones
You will often be shown several clear stones side by side. Their prices aren't comparable, so it helps to know what each one is.
| Stone | Natural? | Hardness | Look |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diamond | Yes | 10 | Strong brilliance and fire |
| White sapphire | Yes | 9 | Bright, a little more brilliant than topaz |
| White topaz | Yes | 8 | Clear and bright, not much fire |
| White zircon | Yes | 6.5 to 7.5 | Strong fire, edges wear more easily |
| Rock crystal (Dur-e-Najaf) | Yes | 7 | Clear, calm white sparkle |
| Cubic zirconia | No, lab-made | About 8 to 8.5 | Strong rainbow fire, heavy for its size |
White topaz sits in a sensible middle: harder than quartz and zircon, natural where cubic zirconia isn't, and far cheaper than white sapphire or diamond. A white sapphire of the same size usually costs several times as much. If a stone sold as white topaz throws strong rainbow flashes and feels heavy, ask whether it is cubic zirconia. Our zircon collection and Dur-e-Najaf collection cover two of the other natural choices.
White topaz in a navratan
South Asian astrology gives diamond to Venus, and in a navratan, the nine-stone setting, white topaz often takes diamond's place when a diamond is beyond the budget. Some astrologers accept the swap and others would rather have white sapphire. These are traditional beliefs, not promised outcomes. If you are buying for a navratan, ask your astrologer which substitute they accept and what size they want. Our navratan collection and the page on the nine planetary stones explain the set, and white topaz is also listed for April as a diamond alternative.
Per carat and per ratti
- 1 carat is 0.2 grams.
- The gemstone ratti used in Pakistan is 0.91 carat, about 0.182 grams.
- The jewellers' sunari ratti is about 0.1215 grams, roughly 0.61 carat.
A low per-ratti rate on the sunari scale buys less stone than the same rate on the gemstone scale. Convert every quote to carats with our carat to ratti converter, work out the totals, and compare those.
Topaz is dense, so a white topaz looks slightly smaller than a rock crystal or white zircon of the same weight. When it comes to setting, the millimetre size is what tells you how it will look on the hand.
Shapes and sizes for common uses
In a navratan the white topaz sits at the centre or in one of the eight places around it, so it has to match the other stones in size; ask your jeweller for the millimetre size before buying. For a solitaire ring, ovals and cushions are the favourites here, and they hide topaz's modest fire better than a round. Emerald cuts look clean and modern but show every inclusion, so they need a very clean stone. Pears and marquises suit pendants and earrings, in a setting that guards the points. For a men's ring, a big oval or cushion of eight carats or more gives a bold look at a price few other natural stones can touch.
Why quotes vary so much
"White stone" covers a lot of ground in our markets. One seller's white topaz is another's rock crystal, white zircon or cubic zirconia, and in a quick photo they all look alike. Cut quality varies widely too, because colourless topaz is often cut quickly to keep weight. Two stones of the same carat weight can sparkle very differently, and the better-cut one costs more for good reason.
Once you boil each offer down to the same facts, the mineral, the exact weight, clarity, cut seen on video, and whether it is untreated, quotes usually settle into a fairly narrow band. The table above shows where our stones fall within it.
Comparing white topaz quotes
- The mineral, in writing. Natural topaz, not cubic zirconia, glass or quartz.
- Treatment. Should be none. Coated "mystic" stones are a different product.
- Clarity. Clean at arm's length, confirmed in a daylight photo.
- Cut. A video showing even sparkle across the face and no central window.
- Tint. A photo against white paper.
- Exact carat weight, millimetre size and which ratti is used.
- Returns, and a chance to inspect before paying.
Budget bands in the shop filters
- Under 5,000 rupees: smaller white topaz for a navratan or a simple ring. Check the cut carefully at this level.
- 5,000 to 20,000 rupees: clean, well-cut stones in bigger ring sizes.
- 20,000 to 50,000 rupees: very large or precision-cut stones. At this budget, compare small white sapphire too.
Two of our stones show how size and price relate: the 5.30 carat white topaz, a neat size for a woman's ring, and the 11.50 carat white topaz, a bold stone for a man's ring. Check them against the table and you will see how gently the per-carat figure rises.
Keeping it bright keeps its value
At 8 on the Mohs scale white topaz resists scratches, but it has perfect cleavage in one direction and can split if knocked hard, so a setting that protects the corners and girdle makes sense for daily wear. Its biggest everyday enemy is plain grease: a film of soap or skin oil on the back turns it grey and dull. Regular washing in warm soapy water with a soft brush brings it back. Our white topaz care guide covers this properly, and the silver vs gold settings guide helps with the metal. White gold or silver keeps it icy; yellow gold gives it a warm cast.
