Two yellow stones, two very different prices

Pukhraj or Sunehla? Telling Yellow Sapphire from Citrine

In short: Yellow sapphire (pukhraj) is corundum: hardness 9, heavy for its size and bright in lustre. Citrine (sunehla) is quartz: hardness 7, noticeably lighter and glassier, and worth far less. Citrine passed off as pukhraj is the most common substitution buyers in Pakistan run into, and a refractometer reading or a lab report tells the two apart in minutes.

Quick answer: Yellow sapphire is corundum, hardness 9, dense and bright. Citrine is quartz, hardness 7, lighter and glassier, and costs a small fraction of what pukhraj does. Citrine sold as pukhraj is the swap we hear about most often in Pakistan. A refractometer reading or a lab report settles the question in a few minutes.

Yellow sapphire vs citrine: a plain guide from Authentic Gems in Karachi for anyone in Pakistan who wants to know which yellow stone they are holding before they hand over money.

Pukhraj and sunehla are both golden yellow, and they get mixed up all the time. They are two completely different minerals, and the price gap is large.

Why people confuse them

At arm's length, a good citrine and a pale pukhraj look almost the same. Because pukhraj is so much more valuable, citrine is sometimes offered as a budget "substitute". There is nothing wrong with that as long as the seller says so clearly and prices it as citrine.

Where they really differ

  • Mineral: yellow sapphire is corundum, the same mineral as ruby and neelam, at hardness 9. Citrine is quartz at hardness 7.
  • Value: yellow sapphire (pukhraj) is a precious stone and worth far more than citrine, which is a semi-precious quartz.
  • Astrology: pukhraj is the traditional stone of Jupiter. Some people wear citrine as a cheaper stand-in for Jupiter, but astrologers do not treat it as the same thing.
  • Origin and treatment: much yellow sapphire comes from Sri Lanka, and a lot of it is heated to improve colour. Much citrine is heated amethyst, which can give it an orange or reddish tint.

How to tell them apart

Weight is the first clue. Pukhraj is about one and a half times as dense as citrine, so the same size stone weighs noticeably more. Lustre is the second: sapphire throws back a sharper, almost metallic shine from its surface, while citrine looks glassy. Neither is proof. A jeweller with a refractometer can read the refractive index, and the numbers in the table above do not overlap, so that reading is decisive. A lab report is the cleanest answer of all. If you want pukhraj for its astrological meaning, buy a natural yellow sapphire you can have tested, not citrine.

Yellow sapphire at a glance

  • Also called: pukhraj; corundum (aluminium oxide)
  • Colour: pale lemon to deep golden yellow
  • Hardness: 9 on the Mohs scale
  • Main sources: Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Thailand, Madagascar, Australia and East Africa
  • Astrology: ruled by Jupiter (Guru or Mushtari); traditionally linked to Sagittarius and Pisces

Buying pukhraj in Pakistan: a short checklist

  1. Get the exact carat weight and the mineral named in writing. The whole yellow sapphire vs citrine question comes down to what the seller is willing to state.
  2. Know what drives the price: depth and evenness of yellow, clarity, origin (Ceylon is valued highly), carat weight, and whether the stone is heated or untreated.
  3. Make sure testing is allowed. An honest seller has no problem with you taking a stone to an independent lab.
  4. Pay on delivery so you see the stone before your money changes hands.
  5. Care is easy: sapphire is very tough. Warm soapy water and a soft brush are enough. Citrine is softer and can fade in long, strong sunlight.

What to remember

  • No single eye test settles yellow sapphire vs citrine. Weight, lustre and a refractive index reading together will.
  • Pay on delivery, check the stone in daylight, and use the 7-day return window if it does not match the listing.
