Quick answer: ruby and sapphire are one mineral, corundum, with a hardness of 9. Red corundum is ruby; every other colour, whether blue, yellow, pink or white, is sapphire. In astrology ruby belongs to the Sun (Leo), blue sapphire to Saturn and yellow sapphire to Jupiter. Carat for carat, a fine ruby usually costs more.
Ruby vs sapphire, explained by Authentic Gems in Karachi for anyone in Pakistan who wants to understand the stone before paying for it.
Yaqoot and neelam are two of the best-known gemstones anywhere, and people are often surprised to hear they are the same mineral. So what actually separates them? Mostly a trace element or two, and a lot of tradition.
| Ruby (yaqoot) | Blue sapphire (neelam) | |
|---|---|---|
| Mineral | Corundum (red) | Corundum (blue and every other colour) |
| Hardness | 9 | 9 |
| What gives the colour | Chromium | Iron and titanium |
| Planet in astrology | Sun (Surya) | Saturn (Zohal / Shani) |
| Zodiac | Leo; July birthstone | Capricorn, Aquarius; September birthstone |
| Traditionally worn | Ring finger, right hand, in gold | Middle finger, right hand, in silver |
| What drives the price | Depth and purity of red, clarity, size, heating | Tone and saturation of blue, clarity, origin, heating |
One mineral, two colours
Ruby and sapphire are both corundum, and both rate 9 on the Mohs scale. When corundum comes out red, it is called ruby. In any other colour, blue, yellow, pink or green, it is sapphire. You could fairly call a ruby a "red sapphire" that earned its own name.
Where they part ways
- Colour: ruby is red, thanks to chromium. Sapphire is best known in blue, which comes from iron and titanium.
- Astrology: ruby (yaqoot) is the Sun's stone. Blue sapphire (neelam) is Saturn's, and yellow sapphire (pukhraj) is Jupiter's.
- Price: a fine Burmese ruby is among the most expensive gems there are. Sapphire covers a huge spread of prices, depending on colour and origin.
How to choose
Go with the colour and meaning that speak to you. If the stone is for astrological reasons, let your birth chart decide, with the help of a qualified astrologer. Whichever you pick, every stone we sell is natural, listed with its weight and any known treatment, and you are welcome to have it tested independently.
Blue sapphire in brief
- Also called: neelam; corundum (aluminium oxide)
- Colour: from light cornflower blue to deep royal blue
- Hardness: 9 on the Mohs scale
- Main sources: Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Kashmir, Madagascar, Thailand and Africa
- Astrology: ruled by Saturn (Shani); traditionally for Capricorn and Aquarius, and the September birthstone
Buying neelam in Pakistan: a short checklist
- Get the exact carat weight, and the origin if it is known. Ruby or sapphire, it always comes back to knowing exactly what you are getting.
- Understand what moves the price: colour and tone (a medium-deep, velvety blue is most valued), clarity, origin (Ceylon and Kashmir carry a premium), weight and treatment.
- Make sure the stone can be tested. An honest seller is happy for you to take the stone to a lab.
- Pay Cash on Delivery so you see the stone before any money changes hands.
- Know how to look after it: sapphire is extremely tough. Warm soapy water and a soft cloth are enough. Keep harsh chemicals away from any stone that has been oiled or fracture-filled.
What to remember
- No single test settles ruby against sapphire, or real against fake. Look at colour, clarity, weight and treatment together.
- Only buy stones sold with their exact weight, origin and treatment stated, and that can be checked by a lab.
- Pay on delivery, look at the stone in daylight, and use the 7-day return window if anything doesn't match the listing.
Questions we get asked
Can I tell ruby from sapphire, or real from fake, at home?
To a point. The visual and hardness checks in our guides catch most fakes, but only a gem lab can confirm a natural, untreated stone. Buy from someone who is glad for you to test it.
