Simple tests for the most imitated ring stone in Pakistan

Real or Fake Feroza? How to Check Your Turquoise

In short: Natural feroza is soft (5 to 6 Mohs) and slightly porous, with uneven colour and real matrix veins; fakes are usually dyed howlite or plastic with colour that is too even. Acetone on a hidden spot lifts dye from a fake, and a hot needle softens plastic but leaves real turquoise unchanged.

Quick answer: natural feroza is a fairly soft stone (5 to 6 Mohs), a little porous, with uneven colour and real matrix veins running through it. Most fakes are dyed howlite or plastic, with colour that is too even and sometimes tiny bubbles. Two simple tests: rub a hidden spot with acetone on cotton (dye comes off a fake, real turquoise stays as it is), and touch it with a hot needle (plastic softens and smells, stone does not).

Feroza is probably the most popular ring stone in Pakistan after aqeeq, and that popularity is exactly why so much fake material is sold as feroza. Customers in Karachi bring us "Irani feroza" from Saddar and online sellers every week, and a good share of it is dyed white stone. This guide covers how we tell real from fake, with special attention to the Nishapuri (Irani) turquoise people value most.

Why so much feroza is fake

Good natural turquoise is soft, porous and not easy to find in clean, even colour. Imitations are cheap to make. So the market is full of dyed howlite, "reconstituted" feroza made from powder and resin, and outright plastic, all made to look like the real thing for very little money.

Signs of genuine Nishapuri feroza

  • Colour: a clear sky blue with a soft, slightly waxy shine rather than a glassy one.
  • Matrix: where veins are present they look natural, varying in thickness and sitting in the stone, not drawn across the surface.
  • Feel: cool and solid in the hand. Plastic warms up quickly and feels too light for its size.

The imitations you will meet

Dyed howlite is the most common. Howlite is a white mineral with grey veins; once dyed blue it can look convincing, but the dye sits in the veins and cracks, and acetone often lifts it. Reconstituted turquoise is real turquoise powder bound with resin into a block. It is not a fake exactly, but it is worth far less than a solid natural stone and should be sold as what it is.

Buying feroza from us

For every Feroza (Turquoise) we list, we state the origin and type clearly, so you know if it is natural, stabilised or otherwise. Each is one stone, photographed as it is, and you pay with Cash on Delivery after seeing it.

Feroza in brief

  • Other names: turquoise, feroza; a hydrated copper aluminium phosphate
  • Colour: sky blue to blue-green, often with brown or black matrix
  • Hardness: 5 to 6 on the Mohs scale
  • Main sources: Nishapur in Iran (the most sought after), Afghanistan, Tibet, Egypt and Arizona
  • Tradition: associated with Jupiter in some systems; in Islamic tradition a stone of protection and good fortune; linked with Sagittarius and the December birthstone list

Before you pay: a short checklist

  1. Get the weight and origin stated. If the seller cannot say where the stone is from or whether it is natural, that is your answer.
  2. Know what moves the price: clean, even sky blue is valued most; Nishapuri origin adds a premium; then matrix pattern, size, and whether the stone is natural, stabilised or reconstituted.
  3. Ask whether testing is fine. A seller with nothing to hide will not object.
  4. Pay on delivery. Open the parcel with the rider there, check the stone, then pay.
  5. Look after it. Feroza is soft and porous. Put the ring on after perfume, attar and lotion, keep it dry, and wipe it with a soft dry cloth. Never soak it.

What to remember

  • No single sign is proof. Colour, matrix, feel, weight and treatment have to agree.
  • Buy feroza that is described honestly: weight, origin and treatment stated.
  • Check it in daylight when it arrives, and use the 7-day return window if it is not as listed.

Common questions

Can I test feroza at home?

Partly. The acetone and hot-needle tests catch dyed howlite and plastic well. Telling natural from stabilised or reconstituted turquoise with certainty needs a gem lab.
