What a lab looks for in a ruby
- Heating: changed inclusions and dissolved silk show the stone has been heated, and sometimes flux residue sits inside healed cracks.
- Lead-glass filling: badly cracked rubies filled with glass, often sold as "composite ruby", show blue flashes and trapped bubbles.
- Synthetics: flame-fusion and flux-grown rubies are common. The lab looks for curved growth lines and flux patterns.
- Look-alikes: red spinel, garnet and glass are separated using refractive index and spectroscopy.
Getting a report
Choose a stone from our ruby collection and message us its link on WhatsApp. We'll explain how testing would work for that stone, and you see the report before you pay. The same applies to red coral, garnet and sapphire. For the bigger picture, read our page on lab-certified gemstones.
