Scorpio Stones: Red Coral (Marjan), or Red Agate برج عقرب
In short: Scorpio's traditional stone is red coral (Marjan, or Moonga). Scorpio, Vrishchik in Vedic astrology, is ruled by Mars and shares the stone with Aries. Red agate (carnelian) is the usual substitute and is thought to be milder. Red coral is traditionally worn on the ring finger in gold or copper, starting on a Tuesday morning.

The main stone: red coral (Moonga)
In the tradition Mars, Mangal, governs energy, courage, property and brothers and sisters, and red coral is its gem. Coral runs from orange-red through to a deep ox-blood. Most buyers we speak to want an even red with a smooth, glossy polish. See our red coral stones.
The substitute: red agate
Red agate, also called carnelian or surkh Aqeeq, stands in for coral and is traditionally the gentler choice. Red jasper is named as well. For Aqeeq in other colours, browse Aqeeq.
How red coral is traditionally worn
- Finger: ring finger.
- Metal: gold or copper.
- Day: put on first on a Tuesday morning.
For rings, coral is often cut as a triangle or an oval. Most astrologers keep it apart from blue sapphire, Neelam.
Checks before you buy
- Dyeing is the most common trick. Colour collecting in cracks or little pits is a giveaway.
- Plastic and glass fakes feel too light or show bubbles.
- Real coral shows fine parallel growth lines running along its length.

Red agate is easy to find in the Under 5,000 filter. For red coral in the weights astrologers usually ask for, compare stones in the 5,000 to 20,000 and 20,000 to 50,000 filters.
Care
Coral is soft and is eaten away by acids, so keep it away from lemon, vinegar, perfume and household cleaners, and wipe it after you take it off. More in our gemstone care guide.
