The small details that separate a fine stone from an ordinary one

How to Judge Chalcedony: Glow, Even Colour and a Waxy Shine

In short: Chalcedony is judged on translucency, even colour and lustre. A fine stone seems lit from inside when held to a window, has a calm, uniform colour such as an even lavender blue, and a soft waxy shine rather than a glassy one. Opaque or chalky stones, and those with sharp bands or brown stains, rank lower.

Chalcedony is the general name for microcrystalline quartz, a family that also takes in agate, carnelian, onyx and bloodstone. When a dealer just says "chalcedony", though, they normally mean the smooth, gently translucent stones in lavender blue, milky white, grey or sea green, with no strong banding. There is plenty of this material around, so what separates good from ordinary comes down to a few quiet details. You can learn to spot them in a minute.

Translucency: does it glow?

A fine chalcedony looks as if it has a light inside it. Hold it up to a window. The light should pass through evenly and give the stone a soft glowing body. Opaque, chalky pieces, or ones with dull grey patches, are lower grade. Of everything on this list, this is probably what moves the price most.

Even colour

With unbanded chalcedony, people want calm, even colour. A soft, uniform lavender blue is the classic favourite. A few faint cloudy streaks are normal. Sharp bands, brown stains or blotches mean you are looking at a different and usually cheaper material.

Lustre: waxy rather than glassy

Natural chalcedony has a gentle, slightly waxy shine, not the hard mirror finish of glass. That tells you about quality and authenticity at the same time. If a stone looks like a glass marble, look at it more carefully.

Cut and polish

Chalcedony is nearly always cut as a cabochon. Check for an even dome, a smooth base and a polish with no pits or haze. A thick, well-shaped cabochon shows off the glow best.

Common imitations

  • Dyed agate: the colour is too bright, or it gathers in cracks and along the bands.
  • Glass: round bubbles under a loupe, and a glassy shine instead of a waxy one.
  • Dyed "blue chalcedony": a deep, saturated blue that natural chalcedony never shows.

Get the seller to confirm in writing that the stone is natural and whether the colour has been treated.

Will it survive a ring?

At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale chalcedony is fine in a ring worn daily, but a hard knock can chip the edge, so a bezel setting makes sense. Wash it in mild soap and water. It is a little porous, so don't let it sit in perfume, oil or chemicals.

The Moon connection

In South Asian practice chalcedony is tied to the Moon (Chandra) and worn for calm and for measured speech. These are traditional beliefs and we don't promise any result. If an astrologer is advising you, our rashi guide may help.

Common questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

Are chalcedony and agate the same thing?

Agate is the banded kind of chalcedony. Plain material without bands is normally just sold as chalcedony.

What matters most when judging chalcedony?

Translucency. A stone that glows evenly when you hold it to the light is worth more than one that is opaque or patchy.

Is blue chalcedony sometimes dyed?

It is. A very strong, saturated blue is often a sign of dye, so ask the seller if the colour is natural.

Can I wear chalcedony every day?

Yes. It is 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale and handles daily wear with normal care.
