About this stone
Everything we know about it
Description
Ethiopia is one of the best-known modern sources of opal, and its stones are often noted for lively flashes of colour. This one weighs 6.10 carats, reference AG-000736.
Size and value
In opal, value mostly follows how strong and how broad the play of colour is, and how much of the stone shows it. A larger piece at a modest rate per carat, like this one, gives you a lot of visible surface for the money. A bigger stone also has more area to catch a knock, so it needs a sensible setting.
What to check
View it in different kinds of light once it arrives. The colour should move as you turn it, not sit flat in one patch. Look over the surface for cracks or dull areas.
Wear and setting
Opal rates 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, which makes a pendant or brooch a sensible home for a stone of this size. A ring is possible, but choose a bezel-style setting that shelters the edges. Ask us about a custom silver ring on WhatsApp.
Smoke or sugar treatment and glued doublets occur in opal generally. Ours are solid natural stones, and we will share what we know about this one. Independent testing is up to you. See the rest of the opal collection for comparison, and our gemstone buying guide for the basics.
Open the parcel in front of the rider and pay only when satisfied. Karachi usually 1–2 working days, other major cities 2–4, and 7 days to return.
This particular stone
This listing is one natural ethiopian opal with a weight of 6.1 Carat. Its price is Rs. 13,730 — roughly Rs. 2,251 for each carat. Origin: Ethiopia. Treatment: treatment not tested. Quote reference AG-000736 when you message us about it. The photographs show this exact stone, so what arrives at your door is the piece you chose on screen.
From six carats up a stone becomes the centre of attention. It wants a broader shank or a secure claw setting and suits an occasion ring, a signet or a centre pendant. Clean natural material of this size turns up far less often, and the per-carat rate reflects that.
Whoever you buy ethiopian opal from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every ethiopian opal for those three points before it is listed, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.
