Zabarjad (Peridot) Benefits: Beliefs, Wearers and Everyday Strengths

In short: In tradition, peridot (zabarjad) belongs to Budh (Mercury) in Vedic astrology and is worn as a gentler, more affordable partner to emerald for speech, study and trade, while folk lore links it to sunlight and calm sleep. These are beliefs, not promises. In practice it is a natural, usually untreated green stone, hard enough for a ring, with real roots in Pakistan.

Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.

Zabarjad, the stone most of the world calls peridot, belongs to Budh (Mercury) in Vedic astrology. People often wear it as a softer, easier-on-the-pocket partner to emerald when they want help with speech, studies or business. Older folk traditions connect it with sunlight and with peaceful sleep. All of that is belief, and we present it as belief. What is not in doubt is that peridot is a natural green stone, usually untreated, hard enough for a ring, and one with real roots in Pakistan.

We have covered what decides peridot's price and peridot as the August birthstone elsewhere. Here we look at the beliefs that surround zabarjad, the people who traditionally wear it, and the down-to-earth reasons customers keep coming back to it.

What peridot actually is

Peridot is gem-quality olivine, a mineral rich in magnesium and iron. The iron is what makes it green, anywhere from a yellowish lime to a deep grass green. It is one of very few gems that essentially comes in only one colour. It forms far down in the earth and is carried up in volcanic rock, and peridot has even turned up inside meteorites, which adds to its appeal.

The mountains of northern Pakistan are among its best-known sources. Peridot from Kohistan in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa made a name for itself with big, clean, lively crystals. Our planned page on Kohistan peridot tells that story, and the mines of Pakistan guide sets it against the country's other deposits.

Zabarjad in Vedic astrology

In Vedic practice the main stone for Budh is emerald, or panna. Peridot is usually counted as an upratna, a substitute stone for the same planet. Astrologers often suggest it when someone wants the Mercury connection but cannot stretch to a good emerald, or simply prefers a cleaner, brighter green.

Budh is traditionally tied to:

  • speech and communication;
  • study, memory and exams;
  • trade, accounts and business deals;
  • sharp thinking and the ability to adapt.

So peridot tends to be recommended for students, traders, writers, teachers and anyone whose living depends on talking and negotiating. In rashi terms it goes most often with Gemini and Virgo, the two signs Mercury rules. Our page on the nine planetary stones explains how the system fits together.

Not every astrologer works the same way. Some see a substitute as weaker than the main gem and ask for a heavier stone; others judge it on its own merits. The weight is often given in ratti, so check which ratti: the normal gem ratti in Pakistan is 0.91 carat, and the sunari ratti jewellers use is about 0.61 carat. Our carat to ratti converter will work it out. Agree the weight, metal and finger with your astrologer before the ring is made.

The name zabarjad and older traditions

Zabarjad came into Urdu by way of Persian and Arabic and appears in classical writing on gems. Older authors used names for green stones loosely, so zabarjad might mean peridot or another green gem, and both were mixed up with emerald for centuries. Zabargad, an island in the Red Sea, was one of the earliest known peridot sources, and the name is often traced back to it.

Some Muslim families hold zabarjad in regard because the word appears in their classical literature. If religion is your reason for choosing a stone, ask a scholar you trust what the texts say and what they do not say. We sell stones; we do not give rulings. Our Islamic gemstones page covers the stones that come up most in that conversation.

Folk beliefs around peridot

Over the centuries, many cultures attached gentle beliefs to peridot. These are recorded traditions, not medical claims and not guaranteed effects.

  • Stone of the sun. Because it glows even under lamplight, peridot was long called a stone of sunlight and worn to keep the spirits up.
  • Quiet nights. Old European lore held that peridot set in gold kept nightmares and fear of the dark away.
  • Friendship and goodwill. It was given to settle quarrels and bring warmth between friends and couples.
  • New beginnings. Its spring-green colour ties it to renewal, so some people pick it when starting a new job or course.

These beliefs are why peridot sits in the calm and focus and love and harmony groups on our purpose pages. Read them as the reasons people have loved the stone, not as results.

Practical strengths that need no belief

Plenty of our customers have no interest in astrology and still pick peridot, for good reasons.

It is normally untreated

Peridot is seldom heated, oiled or dyed. That makes it one of the most natural coloured stones on the market, and it takes away a whole set of questions you would have to ask about an emerald or a sapphire. Even so, ask the seller to confirm it in writing.

The colour is easy to read

With only one colour family to think about, choosing comes down to how pure the green is. You want a lively grass or lime green with no brown in it. You do not need years at a gem counter to see the difference.

It is tough enough for a ring

At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, peridot copes with daily wear if you are reasonably careful. It is softer than sapphire, so a protective setting is worth it on a ring you wear to work.

It gives good value

Small, clean peridot costs far less than an emerald with a similar look, which puts a natural, untreated green stone within reach of most budgets. Our post on natural gemstones on a small budget covers other affordable choices.

It works in silver and in gold

The bright green looks modern in white silver and traditional in yellow gold. Our guide to silver and gold settings goes through the choice.

Peridot or emerald, honestly compared

A lot of people find their way to peridot after getting a quote for an emerald. This is how the two compare in real life.

PointPeridot (zabarjad)Emerald (zamurd)
ColourYellowish to grass green, brightBluish to pure green, deeper
ClarityOften clean to the eyeNearly always included
TreatmentUsually noneUsually oiled
Hardness6.5 to 77.5 to 8, but brittle
Vedic roleSubstitute for BudhMain stone of Budh
Cost for a similar lookMuch lowerMuch higher

If the planet is your main reason, ask your astrologer whether they accept a substitute. If you just want a natural green stone with some sparkle, peridot often gives more beauty per rupee. Our emerald buying guide covers the other side.

Wearing customs

Mercury stones are traditionally set so the stone touches the skin, and many astrologers name the little finger of the right hand. Wednesday, Budh's day, is the usual day to put the ring on for the first time, often in the morning. Gold is the classical metal, but silver is used widely and many Pakistani men prefer it. Families keep their own customs and astrologers do not all agree, so take these as common practice rather than fixed rules.

Picking a peridot to wear

For a ring, a stone of around one carat or slightly more shows its colour well. Our smaller stones show the range: the 0.95 carat peridot suits a slim ring or a lady's hand, and the 1.75 carat Afghan peridot makes a bolder men's ring. Look for:

  • a pure green with no olive or brown cast;
  • no dark "lily pad" inclusions visible in the centre;
  • a lively cut, not a dull, see-through middle.

Glass and other green stones are sometimes sold as zabarjad. Our planned post on real and fake peridot explains the checks, and the planned peridot buying guide takes it step by step. lab-certified peridot has its own listing.

Looking after it

Peridot handles daily wear, but there are a few things it does not like.

  • Acids: keep it away from lemon juice, vinegar and strong household cleaners, which can dull the polish.
  • Sudden heat: a jeweller's torch, or going quickly from hot to cold, can crack it. Ask any jeweller resizing your ring to take the stone out first.
  • Knocks: sharp corners can chip, so remove the ring for heavy work.
  • Cleaning: lukewarm soapy water and a soft brush are all it needs. Skip ultrasonic and steam cleaners.
  • Storage: give it its own pouch, away from harder stones that could scratch it.

Our general gemstone care guide covers the basics for every stone, and the planned how to wear peridot post covers finger, day and metal in tradition.
