How lehsunia is priced, from the eye to the ratti

Cat's Eye Price in Pakistan: What Makes One Lehsunia Worth More

In short: The price of a cat's eye (lehsunia) comes down first to the mineral and the quality of the eye. A chrysoberyl stone with a sharp, centred line costs far more than a quartz cat's eye with a soft, wide band, even when both weigh the same. Astrologers usually prescribe a weight in ratti, so it pays to know which ratti scale is meant.

Two questions decide the price of a cat's eye long before anyone puts it on a scale. What mineral is it, and how good is the eye? A chrysoberyl lehsunia with a sharp, centred line and a quartz cat's eye with a soft, wide band can weigh the same and look alike in a phone photo, yet sit in completely different price brackets.

In Pakistan most people come looking for lehsunia because an astrologer has recommended it, usually with a minimum weight in ratti. So weight, and which ratti is meant, matter more here than with most stones. Below we go through what moves the price, how to turn a ratti prescription into a sensible budget, and how to line up offers from different sellers. Our own current cat's eye prices sit in the table just below, updated each month from what we have listed.

Authentic Gems cat's eye prices

We build this table from the cat's eye stones on our site, each one photographed by itself and given its own price. It shows the lowest, typical and highest figure per stone, and the same spread per carat and per ratti.

Cat Eye · October 2026 edition · PKR, from Authentic Gems listings. 1 ratti = 0.91 carat.
WeightWeightsStonesPer caratPer ratti
6 – 10 carat7.3 – 9.8 ct4Rs 600 – Rs 750Rs 550 – Rs 700
Over 10 carat10.0 – 18.7 ct11Rs 450 – Rs 750Rs 410 – Rs 700

Across our stock, the per-carat figure follows the sharpness of the eye and the body colour far more closely than it follows weight. Use it to check whether a quote is roughly where it should be. For lehsunia against other stones, see the monthly gemstone price guide.

First: which cat's eye are you looking at?

"Cat's eye" is the name of an optical effect, not of one stone. It means a single line of light running across a domed surface. Several minerals can do it, and they sit at very different prices.

  • Chrysoberyl cat's eye: the true lehsunia of South Asian tradition and the one most astrologers have in mind. It is hard, 8.5 on the Mohs scale, with a crisp eye, and it is the most valued of the group.
  • Quartz cat's eye: much more common and softer, around 7 on the Mohs scale. The eye tends to be wider and less defined. It costs a good deal less.
  • Other minerals: tourmaline, apatite, scapolite and a few others can also show an eye. Each is priced as its own species.
  • Fibre-optic glass: a man-made imitation with a band that is too bright and too regular. Its value is close to nothing.

Get the seller to name the mineral in writing. When a stone sold as lehsunia comes in at a small fraction of the normal price, it is almost always quartz or glass. If you want to learn how to judge the eye itself, our grading article Lehsunia grading: the eye, the colour and the honey tone covers that. Here we stay with what each feature does to the price.

What drives the price of chrysoberyl cat's eye

The eye

The best eye is a thin, bright, straight line that runs from one end of the dome to the other, right through the middle. Every fault knocks the price down a step. A wide or blurry line, one that sits off to one side, one that breaks into segments, or one you can only see under a strong torch are all marked down. People buy this stone for the eye, so a weak eye costs more in value than a small shortfall in weight ever would.

Body colour

The traditional favourites are honey yellow, greenish yellow and apple green, and these usually fetch the most. Olive and brownish green stones are common and sit lower. Very dark stones, including the blue-black and black cat's eye you see a lot of in Pakistan, are judged mainly on how sharp the band is, because a good line stands out clearly against a dark body.

Milk and honey

Hold a fine stone under a light coming from one side and you will see one half turn milky while the other half stays a honey colour. When this milk-and-honey effect is clear, it is a sign of good material, and the price goes up with it.

Clarity and translucency

A bit of translucency helps the eye glow from within. Large cracks, or cloudy patches that interrupt the line, pull the value down.

Cut

Cat's eye is always cut as a cabochon, and cutters often leave a heavy base to keep the eye centred. Some extra weight is normal. A very deep, bulky base, though, adds carats you pay for without making the eye any better. Ask for a photo from the side before you agree a price.

Weight

For good stones the price per carat climbs as size goes up, though not as steeply as with ruby or sapphire. With lehsunia, the weight is usually fixed by the astrologer's prescription, which brings us to the ratti problem.

Carat, ratti and the prescription

Lehsunia is very often priced per ratti in Pakistan, and there are two ratti scales in use. They give quite different answers.

  • 1 carat is 0.2 grams.
  • The gemstone ratti used in Pakistan is 0.91 carat, about 0.182 grams.
  • The sunari ratti that jewellers use is about 0.1215 grams, roughly 0.61 carat.

That means "five ratti" is around 4.55 carats on the gemstone scale but only about 3 carats on the sunari scale. Before you go shopping, ask your astrologer which ratti they meant, then convert it to carats with our carat to ratti converter. A seller offering a low per-ratti rate on the sunari scale can easily work out more expensive than one charging a higher rate on the gemstone scale.

In Vedic astrology cat's eye belongs to Ketu, and people traditionally wear it for protection and to steady things after sudden setbacks. These are beliefs, not promises, and practitioners do not all agree on weight, metal or finger. Our page on the nine planetary stones explains where the tradition comes from, and how to wear cat's eye goes through the customs.

Comparing cat's eye quotes properly

  1. The mineral, in writing. Chrysoberyl, quartz or something else.
  2. A video of the eye. Ask for a short clip of the stone being turned under a single light. The line should open and close smoothly and stay in the middle.
  3. Exact carat weight, and which ratti scale.
  4. A side view. So you can see the base is not too heavy.
  5. Treatment. Some cat's eye is irradiated to deepen the colour and some is dyed. Ask directly, and expect treated stones to cost less.
  6. Origin. Sri Lankan lehsunia has a name for itself, but origin can rarely be proven without a lab report, so it should not add much to the price unless it is documented.
  7. Returns and inspection. With this stone in particular, being able to see the eye in your own hand before you pay is worth a lot.

Why one lehsunia costs so much more than another

Walk into three shops in the same bazaar, ask for a five-ratti lehsunia, and you may hear three very different figures. Usually they are describing three different stones. One is quoting chrysoberyl with a sharp eye, the next a quartz cat's eye, the third a stone with lovely colour but an eye that wanders to the side.

The two ratti scales muddy things further. A shop weighing on the sunari ratti will show a higher ratti count for the same stone, so a per-ratti rate that sounds reasonable can hide a bigger total. Some sellers also quote the weight of a stone already set in a ring, which you have no way of checking.

The way through is to bring every offer down to the same four facts: the mineral, the weight in carats, the quality of the eye on video, and any treatment. Once those match up, prices usually settle into a much tighter range, and the table above shows where our own stones fall within it.

Budget bands by filter

  • The entry band: mostly quartz cat's eye or small stones with a soft eye. If you are buying for astrological use, confirm the mineral first.
  • The second band: commercial chrysoberyl with a visible eye, often in darker or olive body colours.
  • The third band: sharper eyes, better colours and bigger sizes.
  • The top band: fine honey or greenish stones with a crisp eye and a clear milk-and-honey effect. At this level, have the stone tested independently.

Two stones from our stock show how the eye reads against a dark body: the 10.00 carat black cat's eye and the 12.10 carat black cat's eye. Compare their bands, then their place in the table.

Warning signs on price

  • A big stone with a perfectly straight, glassy band and a honeycomb pattern when you look from the side. That is fibre-optic glass.
  • "Lehsunia" at a quartz price, or quartz at a chrysoberyl price.
  • A seller who will only talk per ratti and will not tell you the carat weight.
  • A stone you only ever see in still photos, never moving.

For simple checks you can do at home, see our general guide to real and fake gemstones.

Setting it, and how it holds up

At 8.5 on the Mohs scale, chrysoberyl makes a very good everyday ring stone and keeps its polish for years, which helps it hold its value. Closed-back silver settings are common in Pakistan. An open back lets in more light and can make the eye look more alive. To clean it, use warm soapy water and a soft brush. If you are wearing it on an astrologer's advice, decide the metal and finger before the ring is made so you do not have to reset it later. Our guides on gemstone rings for men and our stone setting service help with that step.

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

How much does cat's eye (lehsunia) cost in Pakistan?

That depends on the mineral, how sharp the eye is, the body colour and the weight. The table on this page shows our current lowest, typical and highest cat's eye prices per stone, per carat and per ratti.

Why does chrysoberyl cat's eye cost more than quartz cat's eye?

Chrysoberyl is rarer and harder and shows a crisper eye. It is also the lehsunia that Vedic tradition refers to, so demand stays high.

How many carats is 5 ratti of lehsunia?

About 4.55 carats on the gemstone ratti of 0.91 carat, but only about 3 carats on the smaller sunari ratti. Check with your astrologer which scale they meant.

Do I pay more for a sharper eye?

Yes. After the mineral itself, a thin, bright line that sits in the centre and runs end to end is the biggest single factor in price.

Is black cat's eye a real stone?

Yes. Natural dark chrysoberyl and some other minerals show an eye against a blue-black body. Ask the seller to name the mineral and send a video of the band moving.

What is fibre-optic cat's eye worth?

Very little. It is glass, with a band that is too even and too bright, and a honeycomb pattern you can see from the side.
