Quick answer: a natural gemstone grew in the earth and usually carries small, irregular inclusions. A synthetic stone has the same chemistry but was grown in a lab, so it tends to look too clean, sometimes with curved growth lines or tiny gas bubbles. Both are "real" minerals. What separates them is origin and value, and a lab report will say which one you are holding.
People often hear "synthetic" and think "fake". That is not quite right, but the difference still matters a great deal: it changes what a stone is worth, and for most buyers here it decides whether the stone can be worn for astrological reasons at all. Let us sort out the three categories you will run into.
| Natural | Synthetic (lab-grown) | Imitation (glass) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it formed | In the earth, over millions of years | In a laboratory, in weeks | Moulded glass or plastic |
| Chemistry | Same as the synthetic | Same as the natural | Different material |
| Inside | Irregular crystals, silk, fingerprints | Curved growth lines, tiny bubbles, or too clean | Round bubbles, swirl marks |
| Hardness | As for the mineral | As for the mineral | About 5 to 6 |
| Used in astrology | Yes | Traditionally no | No |
| Value | Highest | A small fraction of natural | Very little |
So what is a synthetic stone?
Take a natural ruby and a lab-grown ruby. Both are corundum coloured by chromium; a refractometer will give the same reading for each. The difference is that one formed slowly underground and the other was grown in a furnace in a few weeks. The synthetic is a genuine ruby in a chemical sense, but it is not rare, so it is worth only a small part of the price of a natural stone that looks the same.
Three categories, side by side
- Natural: formed in the earth. Rarest, most valuable, and the only kind traditionally accepted for astrological wear.
- Synthetic or lab-grown: the same material, made in a factory. Affordable and attractive, but not natural.
- Imitation: glass or plastic made to look like a gem. It has no gem value at all.
How to protect yourself
A loupe and some experience will catch most imitations, but separating natural from synthetic often needs lab equipment. That is why independent testing is the only certain answer. Our authenticity page explains how we describe every stone, and our Gemstone Buying Guide is worth a read before any purchase.
A quick checklist for any gemstone purchase
- Ask for the exact carat weight, origin and treatment. A vague listing is the first warning.
- Compare the price with what the stone claims to be. A large, flawless natural stone at a bargain rate is almost always lab-grown or glass.
- Ask whether independent testing is welcome. It should be.
- Pay on delivery. Check the stone in front of the rider before paying, and remember the 7-day return window.
What to remember
- No single test tells you everything. Look at colour, clarity, weight and treatment together.
- Buy stones that come with weight, origin and treatment stated clearly.
- Inspect in daylight on arrival, and return the stone if it is not what was described.
Common questions
Can I tell natural from synthetic at home?
Sometimes. Glass imitations are usually easy to catch with a loupe. Natural versus lab-grown is harder, and often only a gem lab can say for sure.
Where can I buy natural gemstones in Pakistan?
Authentic Gems is an online store in Karachi selling natural stones, each photographed as it is, with Cash on Delivery across Pakistan and 7-day returns.
Should I consult an astrologer first?
