Description

Kunzite is the pink variety of spodumene, named after the gemmologist George Kunz, who described it in the early twentieth century. Many buyers in Pakistan first meet it in jewellery with pale lilac-pink tones, and it makes a gentle alternative to the usual reds.

This stone weighs 10.05 carats. At 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale it will take ordinary handling, but it is brittle along its cleavage, so treat it as a pendant stone rather than a ring for rough wear. Strong sunlight may fade the colour over the years.

It is common for kunzite to be heated or irradiated to bring out its pink, so we suggest asking about this stone before buying. Message us on WhatsApp quoting GSN-KZ-09 and we will share what we know; independent lab testing is your choice. Further pieces are in the kunzite category.

A stone of ten carats is substantial. A plain silver mount lets the pink do the work, and we are happy to talk through a custom ring setting on WhatsApp.

For cleaning, warm soapy water and a soft cloth are enough. Avoid steam and ultrasonic machines entirely.

When the parcel arrives, look at the colour in daylight and under a lamp, since kunzite can change depth with the light.

You pay the rider only after opening the parcel and checking the stone. Karachi usually takes 1 to 2 working days, other cities 2 to 4, and unused stones can be returned within 7 days. Before you choose, read our kunzite guide.

This particular stone

This listing is one natural kunzite with a weight of 10.05 Carat. Its price is Rs. 11,330 — roughly Rs. 1,127 for each carat. Treatment: treatment not tested. Quote reference GSN-KZ-09 when you message us about it. The photographs show this exact stone, so what arrives at your door is the piece you chose on screen.

From six carats up a stone becomes the centre of attention. It wants a broader shank or a secure claw setting and suits an occasion ring, a signet or a centre pendant. Clean natural material of this size turns up far less often, and the per-carat rate reflects that.

On the Mohs scale kunzite rates 6.5 to 7. That is middle-of-the-road hardness: comfortable in pendants and earrings, and in rings worn with some care. Store it apart from harder stones so it does not pick up scratches, and wipe it with a damp cloth rather than scrubbing.

Whoever you buy kunzite from, make sure of three things: the stone is natural rather than lab-grown, glass or glass-filled; any treatment is stated in writing; and the weight quoted is the weight of the finished stone. We check every kunzite for those three points before it is listed, and because you pay on delivery you can look at the stone — or have it tested — before any money changes hands.

Questions about this stone

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

Is this kunzite natural?

Yes. It is natural kunzite (spodumene), not a lab-grown or glass stone. Kunzite is commonly colour-enhanced in the trade and we do not hold a treatment report on this particular stone, so we state what we know rather than claiming it is untreated. Message us and we will arrange independent testing if you want it confirmed before you buy.

Can this 10.05 carat stone be worn in a ring?

It can be, but at this size a pendant or an occasional-wear cocktail ring suits it better than a daily ring. A stone this large needs a heavy claw or bezel setting to shield it, since kunzite has perfect cleavage and a knock on the wrong plane will split it.

Will the colour fade?

Kunzite can pale after years of prolonged direct sunlight. This is well documented for the mineral and is why it is sometimes called an evening stone. Normal indoor wear and daylight will not affect it; store it in its pouch away from a sunlit window and it will keep its colour indefinitely.

How should I clean it?

Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft cloth or very soft brush. Never use an ultrasonic or steam cleaner on kunzite, and keep it away from perfume, hairspray and household chemicals. Put jewellery on after cosmetics, not before.
