Sagittarius Gemstones: Pukhraj (Yellow Sapphire) and Citrine برج قوس
In short: Sagittarius, called Dhanu in Vedic astrology, is ruled by Jupiter, so its traditional stone is yellow sapphire (pukhraj). Citrine (sunehla) and yellow topaz are the usual substitutes. Pukhraj counts among the stronger stones, so people are generally advised to have a reading first, and it is traditionally worn on the index finger in gold.

Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
The main stone: yellow sapphire (pukhraj)
Tradition connects Jupiter, or Guru, with wisdom, prosperity, children and teachers, and pukhraj is Jupiter's gem. It is yellow corundum, hard and lively. Have a look at our yellow sapphire stones; every one has its own photo and its own price.
The second stone: citrine or yellow topaz
Citrine is the substitute people reach for most often, and it is considered gentler. Yellow topaz is accepted too, and other topaz colours are listed separately. Many readings allow pukhraj to be worn alongside ruby or pearl.
How pukhraj is traditionally worn
- Finger: the index finger.
- Metal: gold.
- Day: put on for the first time on a Thursday morning, Jupiter's day.
Most readings keep pukhraj away from Venus stones such as diamond and white sapphire.
Checks before you buy
- Most yellow sapphire has been heated. Ask whether yours is heated, untreated or beryllium-treated.
- Citrine, yellow glass and lab-grown sapphire all get sold as pukhraj. Ask which mineral you are actually buying.
- An even colour, free of brownish or greenish patches, is what you want.
- For an expensive stone, ask us to arrange independent lab testing. See how we check every stone.

Budget
Citrine usually turns up under the Under 5,000 and 5,000 to 20,000 filters. Pukhraj at an astrological weight is more likely to be under 20,000 to 50,000 or Over 50,000.
Care
Pukhraj is hard and cleans easily in warm soapy water. Citrine can fade if left in strong sun for long periods. Our gemstone care guide has more.
Buying pukhraj and citrine from Authentic Gems
We photograph every stone exactly as it is and price it on its own, and we disclose any treatment we know about. A certificate is available if you ask, and we can arrange independent lab testing. You pay Cash on Delivery anywhere in Pakistan, opening the parcel and checking the stone before the rider gets paid. Orders leave us within 1 working day of confirmation, and Karachi deliveries usually arrive in 1–2 working days; our delivery details cover the rest of the country. Tell us whether your astrologer wants an untreated pukhraj or accepts a heated one, and the minimum weight, and we will put together a shortlist. If pukhraj is more than you want to spend, we will show you citrine or yellow topaz.
The dates given here are Western sun-sign dates. Vedic practice works differently: your rashi is the sign the Moon occupied at the moment you were born, and it often turns out to be a different sign from your sun sign. Our rashi guide shows you how to work yours out.
