Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
The main stone: yellow sapphire (Pukhraj)
Pukhraj is Jupiter's gem. Guru, as Jupiter is called, is tied in the tradition to wisdom, prosperity, children and teachers. Most buyers are after a clean lemon to golden yellow. Our yellow sapphire stones each have their own listing, so you can compare colour and weight side by side.
The substitute: citrine (Sunehla)
Citrine is the usual Jupiter substitute. It is thought to be milder and many people wear it without a reading at all. Yellow topaz is accepted too. If you'd like a softer yellow in Aqeeq, there is yellow agate, though it isn't a classical substitute.
How Pukhraj is traditionally worn
- Finger: index finger.
- Metal: gold.
- Day: put on first on a Thursday morning.
Astrologers often allow Pukhraj alongside ruby or pearl, and keep it apart from diamond and the other Venus stones.
Checks before you buy
- Ask whether the Pukhraj is heated, untreated or beryllium-diffused. Many astrologers ask specifically for untreated.
- Yellow glass, citrine and lab-grown sapphire all get sold as Pukhraj. Hardness and refractive index tell them apart, and a lab can confirm.
- Most citrine on the market is heated amethyst. That is normal, but it should be disclosed.
- Read how we check every stone.
Also worth reading: citrine: heated, natural and tradition.
Budget
Citrine and yellow agate turn up often in the Under 5,000 filter. For Pukhraj in the weights astrologers usually give, compare stones in 20,000 to 50,000 and Over 50,000.
Care
Pukhraj cleans up well in warm soapy water with a soft brush. Keep citrine out of long spells of direct sun. See our gemstone care guide and topaz care.
Buying Pukhraj or citrine from Authentic Gems
Each stone is photographed as it is and priced individually, with known treatments written on the listing. Pay Cash on Delivery anywhere in Pakistan: open the parcel in front of the rider, look at the stone, then pay. If you want a lab's opinion, you're welcome to have it tested independently. We dispatch within 1 working day of confirming; Karachi orders usually land in 1–2 working days, and our delivery details cover the rest of the country. Tell us if your astrologer wants an untreated Pukhraj and the minimum weight, and we'll shortlist stones to match. If Pukhraj is beyond the budget, we'll show you citrine or yellow topaz and be clear about which is which.
About the dates: the ones above are Western sun-sign dates. In Vedic astrology what counts is your rashi, the sign the Moon was in when you were born, and it often differs from your sun sign. Our rashi guide shows how to find it.
