Wearing tiger eye

Wearing Tiger Eye: Which Finger, Which Hand, Which Metal

In short: Tiger eye usually goes on the ring finger, since popular practice ties it to the Sun, although some astrologers name the middle finger instead. These are customs, not promises. At roughly 7 on the Mohs scale it is fine for daily wear and looks good in silver or gold, ideally in a setting that shows off its moving band of light.

Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.

Of all the stones we sell, tiger eye is one of the least fussy to wear. It is quartz, so it is hard enough for daily use, it needs no special handling, and it looks right in silver or gold. The real decisions are about custom (which finger, which day) and about setting the stone so its moving band of light shows at its best.

We cover both here. The customs come from popular astrological practice and family habit in Pakistan, and we pass them on as tradition, not as promises. The setting and care advice comes from how tiger eye actually behaves on the hand. For what people traditionally wear it for, see our piece on tiger eye's moving band and its beliefs.

First, what tiger eye is

Tiger eye, often sold here as chashm-e-babri, is quartz that grew in place of fine mineral fibres. Those parallel fibres catch light in a bright band that slides across the stone as it moves. Golden brown is the classic colour. Blue-grey material is sold as hawk's eye, red tiger eye is usually heated golden stone, and tiger iron (iron tiger eye) mixes tiger eye with bands of hematite and red jasper.

At around 7 on the Mohs scale it shrugs off everyday scratches, which is why wearing it is so much simpler than wearing softer stones like pearl or opal.

Which finger

Tiger eye isn't one of the nine classical planetary stones of Vedic astrology. In popular practice it is most often linked with the Sun, and so the finger most people name is the ring finger, which tradition gives to the Sun. Some astrologers connect tiger eye with other planets and name the middle finger instead. Practice really does vary, so if an astrologer has advised you, wear it on the finger they gave you.

If you simply like the stone, any finger will do. The ring finger and little finger take the fewest knocks; the index finger is the busiest and most likely to bang the stone into things.

Which hand

The usual astrological instruction is the right hand, particularly for men, and some families follow a custom of the left hand for women. With no instruction to follow, wear it on the hand you don't write with and the ring will stay smart longer.

Silver, gold or copper

  • Silver is the most popular choice in Pakistan and the usual metal for men who avoid gold for religious reasons; if that is your concern, ask a scholar you trust. Silver's cool tone makes the golden band stand out nicely.
  • Gold flatters tiger eye's warm colour and is often recommended where the stone is tied to the Sun, since gold is the Sun's traditional metal.
  • Copper and panchdhatu (a five-metal alloy) are named by some astrologers for Sun stones. They darken fast and can turn the skin green, so they need more cleaning.

Our guide to silver versus gold ring settings compares the practical side of each.

Day and time customs

Many people who wear tiger eye on astrological advice follow these customs. They are traditions, and we don't promise any result from them.

  • Day: Sunday, the Sun's day, is the usual choice. If an astrologer links the stone to a different planet, they will normally name that planet's day.
  • Time: morning, often within an hour or two of sunrise.
  • Preparation: many rinse the ring in clean water before the first wear, and some say a short prayer or recitation according to their own practice.

For which stones usually go with which signs, our gemstones by rashi guide sets out the common lists, and the Leo page covers the Sun's own sign.

Combining it with other stones

Plenty of men here wear two or three rings, so we get asked about combinations a lot. In astrological practice, stones are paired according to how their planets are said to get along, and astrologers disagree on the details. Where tiger eye is treated as a Sun stone, some advise against wearing it with blue sapphire (neelam), which belongs to Saturn. If you already wear a planetary stone on an astrologer's advice, check with them before adding tiger eye. Our nine planetary stones page shows the traditional planet for each stone.

If you are wearing stones for looks alone, think about colour and metal instead. Tiger eye sits nicely beside aqeeq, black agate and other earthy stones in silver. Stick to one ring per finger, and don't wear tiger eye right next to a soft stone such as coral or pearl, where the two will rub.

When to take it off

Tough as it is, it has limits. Take the ring off before sport, weight training, gardening, working on the car or using heavy tools. Many people also take it off at night so the mount doesn't snag on bedding. Put it back on once your hands are clean and dry.

Choosing the weight

Tiger eye is affordable, so most people choose by size and look rather than a strict weight. If your astrologer has given a weight in ratti, ask whether they mean the gemstone ratti of 0.91 carat or the smaller sunari ratti of about 0.61 carat, then use our carat to ratti converter. Tiger eye is lighter than sapphire or ruby, so a stone of the same weight is bigger; plenty of men's ring stones are well over ten carats.

Setting it so the band looks right

The moving band is the whole point of tiger eye, and the setting can make or spoil it.

Decide which way the band runs

Look at the stone and see which way the band lies. Most people like it running across the finger, side to side, so it rolls along the length of the stone as the hand moves. Others prefer it running along the finger. Neither is wrong, but tell the jeweller before they begin, because an oval stone can only go one way into an oval mount.

Look for a good dome

Tiger eye is cut as a cabochon. A nicely rounded dome gives a sharp, bright band; a flat stone gives a weak one. Check that the band sits in the middle when the stone is level.

Bezel or prongs

A bezel, a metal rim right round the stone, is the usual choice for men's rings and protects the edge from chips. Prongs let more light in from the sides and suit lighter, more decorative rings. For everyday wear, the bezel is safer.

Open or closed back

An open back, so the stone touches the skin, is the common astrological request, and it also lets you see and clean the underside. A closed back is fine for a fashion ring.

Get your ring size right before the stone is set. Our ring size guide and at-home measuring guide will help, and the gemstone ring for men guide has more ideas for men's rings.

Other ways to wear it

  • Bead bracelets. Tiger eye beads make a popular bracelet. Elastic cord stretches with time, so one strung on wire or knotted cord lasts longer.
  • Pendants. A big cabochon makes a strong pendant. Hang it so the band runs across the stone when it rests on the chest.
  • Tasbih. Tiger eye beads give a tasbih a warm shine. Our tasbih page compares bead stones.
  • Cufflinks and keyrings. Its toughness suits pieces that get handled all day.

Daily care

  • Everyday wear is fine. It takes ordinary knocks well, but a hard blow on a tiled floor or a metal edge can still chip the dome. Remove it for heavy lifting, the gym and building work.
  • Cleaning. Lukewarm water, a little mild soap and a soft brush, then dry with a cloth. Natural tiger eye is perfectly safe with this.
  • Dyed stones. Blue, green or pink "tiger eye" is usually dyed. Keep it away from strong soaps, solvents and long soaks, which can lift the colour.
  • Storage. Keep the ring away from softer stones it might scratch, such as pearl, opal and coral, and from diamond or sapphire, which can scratch it.
  • The silver. Polish a silver mount with a dry silver cloth. Tiger eye doesn't need dip cleaners, and they are harsh on other stones you may own.

Our general gemstone care guide goes into cleaning in more detail.

Picking a tiger eye to wear

Look for a bright band that travels smoothly from one edge to the other, a rich golden colour with good contrast, and a smooth, even dome. Our tiger eye collection lists every stone individually. This 11.60 carat tiger eye is right for a classic men's ring, and this 28.65 carat tiger eye is big enough for a bold pendant. Prefer a darker, banded look? See our iron tiger eye stones. Common questions

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly — we answer on WhatsApp during working hours.

Which finger is tiger eye worn on?

Most often the ring finger, because popular practice connects tiger eye with the Sun. Some astrologers say the middle finger, so if you have an astrologer, go with them.

Can I have tiger eye set in silver?

Yes. Silver is the most common metal for tiger eye rings in Pakistan and makes the golden band pop; gold and copper are used too.

Is there a traditional day for first wearing tiger eye?

Sunday morning is the usual custom, because of the stone's link with the Sun. It is a tradition and no result is promised.

Which way should the band run in a ring?

Most people like it running across the finger, side to side, but either is fine. Tell the jeweller before setting, as an oval stone only fits one way.

Is a tiger eye ring okay for everyday wear?

Yes. At about 7 on Mohs it takes daily wear well, but a hard knock can still chip it, so take it off for heavy work.

Is blue tiger eye natural?

Natural blue-grey tiger eye is sold as hawk's eye. Bright blue, green or pink tiger eye is usually dyed and needs gentle cleaning.
