Traditional belief vs gemmology: anything on this page about luck, protection, planets, healing or religious tradition describes traditional and cultural beliefs — not proven effects, religious rulings or medical advice. A stone's identity, hardness, treatment and origin are gemmology, which a lab can test; the references at the end of the page cover that side.
The stones and the reasons behind them
Opal and white topaz, for Venus
In Vedic astrology, Shukra (Venus) governs love, beauty and marriage. Its principal stone is diamond, and in Pakistan opal and white topaz are the usual substitutes.
Moti and moonstone, for the Moon
Moti is the Vedic stone of Chandra, the Moon, and is traditionally worn for an even temper and gentle relationships. Moonstone often stands in for it.
Kunzite
Kunzite, some of it mined in Afghanistan and in Pakistan's north, is associated in modern Western lore with an open heart.
Picking the right one
- As an engagement or wedding present: white topaz is bright and hard, at 8 on the Mohs scale. Opal has play-of-colour but is softer, so keep it away from knocks and sudden heat.
- For a quiet, classic look: pearl or moonstone. Both are soft and should be kept clear of perfume and hard surfaces.
- For colour: kunzite. Strong sun can fade its pink, so it is best kept for evening wear.
Before buying, read wearing opal and what decides a pearl's price.
Traditional ways of wearing them
Venus stones like opal and white topaz are normally set in silver or white gold and put on for the first time on a Friday, often on the middle or little finger. Pearl and moonstone are traditionally set in silver and first worn on a Monday. When it is a gift, many couples just pick a stone the other person will love to wear.
All of this is belief handed down through families and traditions. None of it is a promise, and no stone can guarantee any outcome. Choose something you like and can afford, and enjoy the tradition as part of the stone's story.
