Hyderabad sits on the Indus, a short drive up the M-9 from us in Karachi, and has been a heart of Sindhi culture for centuries: its bazaars, its glass bangles, its ajrak. It is close, too, to some of the most loved Sufi shrines in the country, Shah Abdul Latif Bhitai's at Bhit Shah among them. Across this region a ring stone has long been part of devotional life, and aqeeq above all is worn everywhere. Authentic Gems sends natural stones from Karachi to Hyderabad by insured, tracked courier, and you pay only once you have seen the stone.
Shrine-stall stones: what to look out for
Stalls near shrines and in the old bazaars sell aqeeq, feroza and dur-e-najaf in every colour you can think of. Some are genuine. Many are dyed chalcedony, reconstituted turquoise or glass. If you buy locally:
- Take the stone out of the stall and look at it in daylight.
- Ask straight out whether it has been dyed or stabilised.
- Pass on stones whose colour seems to gather in cracks or around a drill hole.
- For a bigger stone, ask for the weight and a per-carat price.
Our gemstone buying guide has more simple checks.
Devotional stones and their traditions
- Aqeeq: Yemeni, Sulemani and banded agates, worn as ring stones in Islamic custom. Natural aqeeq has slightly uneven colour and soft banding; perfectly flat, bright colour is often dye.
- Dur-e-najaf: a clear quartz cherished for its link with Najaf. It should look like rock crystal, not glass with round bubbles.
- Feroza: turquoise, worn for protection by tradition. Our listings say whether a feroza is natural or stabilised.
- Moti (pearl): linked by tradition with the Moon and with calm.
These are traditions and matters of faith, and we describe them as such. Our job is making sure the stone itself is natural and honestly described.
Precious stones for astrology and weddings
Hyderabad families also buy the precious stones of astrological tradition and bridal jewellery: neelam (blue sapphire), pukhraj (yellow sapphire), yaqoot (ruby) and zamurd (emerald). If an astrologer has recommended a stone, send the recommendation and your budget on WhatsApp and we will suggest natural stones from stock. The gemstones by rashi guide explains the traditional pairings, and the gemstone names page matches Urdu and Sindhi names to English. No stone can guarantee an outcome.
What comes with every stone we sell
- Natural material, with known treatments disclosed on the listing.
- Its own photos. Each listing is one stone, photographed as it is.
- Its own price. The per-carat rate is the price divided by the carat weight.
- A certificate of authenticity on request, and independent lab testing arranged if you ask. See the authenticity page.
