Multan, the City of Saints, has a deep-rooted tradition of devotional and protective ring stones. Walk past the shrines of Bahauddin Zakariya and Shah Rukn-e-Alam and you will see aqeeq, feroza, dur-e-najaf and hadeed on hand after hand, alongside the astrological neelam, pukhraj and yaqoot. These are also the stones most often faked. Authentic Gems sends natural, individually photographed stones from Karachi to Multan and the rest of southern Punjab by insured courier, and you pay only once you have seen the stone.
How to spot dyed aqeeq and fake feroza
Because aqeeq and feroza sell in such quantities, the market is crowded with dyed chalcedony, reconstituted turquoise and plain glass. Some signs to look for:
| Stone | Signs of natural material | Warning signs |
|---|---|---|
| Aqeeq | Soft, slightly uneven colour with fine natural banding | Flat, very bright colour; colour pooled in cracks or around the drill hole |
| Feroza | Natural shifts in colour and matrix | Perfectly uniform blue; matrix that looks painted on; a big stone at a tiny price |
| Dur-e-najaf | Looks like clear rock crystal, may carry natural inclusions | Round gas bubbles, a sign of glass |
Some feroza sold today is stabilised, a common and accepted treatment as long as it is declared, and our listings declare it. The real vs fake gemstones guide has more checks, and only a lab can confirm what home tests suggest.
Devotional and traditional stones we carry
Depending on stock, we have natural aqeeq (Yemeni, Sulemani and Shajri among them), dur-e-najaf, feroza and moti, each priced on its own by weight and grade. People buying for an urs, a ziyarat or as gifts often want matching pairs. WhatsApp us the colour and size you need and we will send photos of suitable stones. The meaning of these stones is a matter of faith and tradition, and we describe them in those terms.
The precious stones
Multan's traders and landowning families have bought the classic astrological stones for generations too:
- Neelam (blue sapphire), by tradition Saturn's stone.
- Pukhraj (yellow sapphire), Jupiter's stone in Vedic tradition.
- Yaqoot (ruby), the stone of the Sun.
- Zamurd (emerald), associated with Mercury.
- Opal, liked for gifts and lighter jewellery.
Local choice in these stones is often thin, and written treatment details are rare. Each of our listings is one natural stone, photographed as it is, with known treatments disclosed. A certificate of authenticity is available on request and independent lab testing can be arranged. See our authenticity page, the rashi guide for traditional pairings, and the Urdu and English names page.
Before you pay anyone
- Look at the stone in daylight, outside the shop if possible.
- Ask whether it is dyed, stabilised or treated in any other way, and get the answer in writing.
- Get the carat weight and work out the per-carat rate.
- Be suspicious of a bright, flawless stone at a bargain price.
