Sahiwal, called Montgomery until 1966, is a farming city in the middle of Punjab, between the Ravi and the Sutlej. Its name is known far outside Pakistan thanks to the Sahiwal breed of dairy cattle. The district also holds Harappa, one of the two great excavated cities of the Indus Valley Civilisation, where archaeologists have found beads of carnelian, agate and other stones cut thousands of years ago. What Sahiwal wears, and why

Checking a stone in Sahiwal

Stone sellers gather at shrine fairs and in the main bazaars, and you will see trays of aqeeq and feroza at very low prices. Some are honest; some are dyed or glass. Before paying:

1. Look along the cracks for dye. Colour that collects in fractures points to dyed agate. Our aqeeq real or fake guide shows what to look for.
2. Look closely at feroza. Natural turquoise often carries a web of matrix lines. A very even blue with no texture may be dyed howlite or plastic. Read real vs fake feroza.
3. Weigh in carats or the standard ratti. The gem ratti is 0.91 carat, while the goldsmith's sunari ratti is about 0.61 carat. Use the carat to ratti converter before comparing per-ratti prices.
4. Ask for the treatment in writing. Stabilised feroza and heated pukhraj are fine when declared.

In Sahiwal's joint families a stone is a common Eid or wedding present for a son, son-in-law or grandchild.
