Checking a stone in Mirpur

Mirpur's jewellers do a big wedding trade, and stones usually come already set, which makes careful checking harder. Some habits that help:

1. Be careful with the word "Kashmiri". Kashmir sapphire is among the rarest in the world. "Kashmir neelam" without a lab report is a sales phrase, not a fact. Our sapphire origins guide explains why.
2. Ask to see the stone loose. A setting can hide chips, foil backing or a shallow stone.
3. Get the treatment stated. Heating is normal for sapphire and ruby when declared. Glass filling and dyeing are not acceptable as "natural".
4. Agree on the weight unit. The gem ratti is 0.91 carat; the jeweller's sunari ratti is about 0.61 carat. The carat to ratti converter shows the difference.
