What Sukkur buyers ask for, and why

Upper Sindh is shrine country, from Sadhu Bela on its island to the dargahs out towards Shikarpur, and many of the stones worn here are chosen for devotion or family custom rather than fashion.

Checking a stone yourself in Sukkur

Jewellers in Sukkur's older bazaars and over in Rohri sell a wide range of ring stones, and the quality runs from very good to coloured glass. A few habits protect you wherever you buy:

1. Look in daylight, away from the counter lamps. Strong bulbs make glass and dyed stones glow. Sukkur's fierce sun is on your side here: step outside and look again.
2. Ask what treatment the stone has had. Heated neelam and pukhraj are normal when declared. Dyed aqeeq or glass-filled yaqoot sold as natural is not.
3. Get the weight in carats or standard ratti. The gem ratti used in Pakistan is 0.91 carat; the goldsmith's sunari ratti is smaller, about 0.61 carat. Ask which is meant, and use our carat to ratti converter to compare quotes.
4. Distrust a big, clean, bright stone at a small price. Natural material rarely behaves like that.

Once your order is confirmed it leaves Karachi within 1 working day, travels up the N-5 or the motorway by insured, tracked courier, and usually reaches Sukkur in 2 to 4 working days. We sell natural stones only and disclose known treatments. A certificate is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged if you want a second opinion; the authenticity page explains how. If the stone is not right for you, send it back within 7 days of delivery, unused and in its original packaging, under our return policy.

Wearing a stone in Sukkur's heat

Summers in upper Sindh are among the hottest anywhere in Pakistan, and that changes how a ring stone wears. Sweat and soap collect behind a closed setting and dull the stone, so clean the back of the ring with warm water and a soft brush every few weeks.
