Ratti or carat?

In smaller markets, stones are still often sold by the ratti and judged by eye. The catch is that the ratti is not one fixed weight. Sellers convert it differently, so "five ratti" in one shop may not be "five ratti" in the next. The carat never changes:

• Look in daylight. Glass and synthetics often look too perfect under shop lights.
• Ask whether the stone is natural and whether it is treated, and get the answer written down.
• Distrust bargains. A big, clean neelam or yaqoot at a very low price is almost never natural.
• Insist on carats. Without a weight there is no fair comparison.
