Skardu is the main town of Baltistan, spread across a broad valley where the Indus runs between high, dry mountains. Expeditions to K2 and the Baltoro glacier start here, as do trips to the Deosai plains, Shigar and Khaplu. Balti culture, with its own language and its old wooden mosques and forts, gives the area a character all its own. Baltistan is also one of the best-known sources of gem crystals in the world: the pegmatites around Shigar and the side valleys have produced aquamarine, topaz, tourmaline and garnet that collectors travel far to find. Baltistan's gem heritage

Aquamarine is the stone most tied to this valley. Long blue-green crystals from Shigar and the country around it are known to collectors worldwide. Local miners and traders mostly deal in crystals and rough rather than cut stones, so what you see in Skardu bazaar may be specimens, not finished gems.

What Skardu buyers ask for

• Aquamarine (beruj): the valley's own stone and a favourite gift. Pale colour is natural; a very strong blue is often heated.
• Topaz: colourless to golden material comes from the same pegmatites. Bright blue topaz has been treated.
• Tourmaline and garnet: colourful and hard-wearing, good in rings.
• Aqeeq and dur-e-najaf: ring stones of Muslim tradition, worn by many in Baltistan. See Islamic gemstones.
• Neelam and yaqoot: chosen on astrological advice by some families.

Beliefs about stones are traditions, not promises. For religious questions, ask a scholar you trust.

Checking a stone in Skardu

Buying close to the source is exciting, but it has risks of its own. Rough and specimens are priced on beauty and rarity, and cut stones need the same checks as anywhere else:

1. Ask whether the stone was cut locally or brought in. Some cut "Skardu" stones are imported.
2. Look for treatment. Heated aquamarine and irradiated topaz are common and acceptable when declared, but shouldn't carry the price of natural colour.
3. Check for glass. Very clean, large, cheap stones showing tiny round bubbles under a loupe are glass.
4. Agree on the weight unit. The gem ratti is 0.91 carat; the sunari ratti about 0.61 carat. Use the carat to ratti converter to compare.

From Karachi to Skardu is one of the longest routes we send. After confirmation, your order leaves Karachi within 1 working day, and the insured, tracked courier normally delivers in up to about 7 working days. We cover Skardu town and its surroundings, and Shigar, Khaplu, Kharmang and Roundu wherever the courier reaches. The road in runs through steep gorges, and landslides or winter weather can add a few days; we will tell you if a parcel is held up. All our stones are natural, with known treatments disclosed. A certificate is available on request, and independent lab testing can be arranged; see the authenticity page. Unused stones can be returned within 7 days of delivery under the return policy.

Choosing aquamarine for everyday wear

Aquamarine sits at about 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale, so it suits a ring worn daily, though a hard knock can still chip it. A slightly deeper colour often looks better in a ring than a very pale stone, and a clean stone shows its colour more evenly than an included one. Bezel settings protect the edges well.
